Job Description

Blue Water Thinking is seeking Sterile Processing Technicians to join our team. A minimum of 20 hours per week, up to 40 hours per week, with rotating shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as required.

* MUST be able to provide proof of Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or higher by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) or similar certification*

Responsibilities:

  • Decontamination Area:
    • Transport contaminated RME from point of use biohazard areas to the decontamination area.
    • Disassemble, clean, and decontaminate RME following manufacturer’s instructions and facility standard operating procedures.
    • Operate and troubleshoot cleaning equipment such as washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and automated endoscope reprocessors.
    • Perform manual and mechanical cleaning of surgical and dental instruments, ensuring all bioburden and contamination are removed.
    • Conduct visual inspections of all RME for cleanliness and proper function before moving to the preparation area.
  • Preparation and Packaging Area:
    • Perform all functions of the prep, assembly, and sterilization process, including quality assurance documentation.
    • Inspect, assemble, and package surgical trays and instruments based on count sheets and sterilization requirements.
    • Load and operate sterilizers, including steam, low-temperature gas plasma (Sterrad), and automated endoscope reprocessors.
    • Ensure proper storage and transport of sterilized items in accordance with VA protocols.
  • High-Level Disinfection (HLD) Area:
    • Perform all functions of the HLD process, ensuring the safe use of HLD equipment and chemicals.
    • Operate automated endoscope reprocessors and other HLD systems, following manufacturer’s instructions.
    • Conduct regular maintenance and refill/replace chemicals as needed in HLD equipment.
  • Case Cart and Sterile Storage:
    • Prepare case carts for the Operating Room (OR), ensuring all instruments on the pull sheet are included and sterile.
    • Maintain and rotate stock in sterile storage areas, following all established protocols.
  • General Responsibilities:
    • Adhere to all required safety measures, including wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Perform quality assurance checks for reprocessing equipment and RME.
    • Follow all relevant procedures outlined by the VA, CDC, Joint Commission (JC), VHA directives, and local policies.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of recent Sterile Processing Technician experience.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Relevant education and training above high school level (e.g., formal sterile processing certification programs) may be substituted for experience.
  • Certification: Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or higher by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) or similar certification is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • In-depth knowledge of sterile processing techniques, including the cleaning, sterilization, and storage requirements of complex surgical instruments and RME.
    • Ability to interpret and follow detailed manufacturer’s instructions and VA standard operating procedures.
    • Familiarity with infection control standards, including microbiology, aseptic techniques, and Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8 hours per day).
    • Frequent bending, lifting of instruments and equipment (up to 50 lbs), and pushing/pulling heavy carts.
    • Must be capable of working in environments with varying temperatures, noise levels, and PPE requirements.
  • Immunization & Health Requirements:
    • Immunization record and/or titer results for Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis (Tdap), Tuberculosis (TB), and other required vaccinations.
    • Must pass VA-specific health screenings and respiratory fit testing as needed.
    • Must provide proof of COVID vaccination + Flu vaccination during flu season, or, as an alternative, appropriate documentation that will support either a medical or religious exemption.


Eligibility:

•    Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future
•    Must be able to obtain and maintain the required federal public trust clearance for this role


Compensation:

Hourly Rate of $22.58-$26.58/hr
