Senior RF Engineer – Wireless Survey (Contract)
Overview
We’re seeking a Senior RF Engineer to perform on-site assessment and documentation of the current wireless design and system configurations within a factory environment in Austin, TX. This role centers on capturing the as-is state—topology, configurations, access point inventory/placement, and operational policies—across environments using Aruba AirWave and Mist. The engineer will validate what’s deployed, identify gaps or inconsistencies, and produce clear, client-ready documentation of the existing implementation.
Responsibilities
- Conduct on-site wireless surveys/walkthroughs (active/passive) across factory floors and adjacent areas to document the current RF environment and note coverage/roaming pain points.
- Inventory and record access points (make/model, location, mounting, cabling path, controller/tenant association) and confirm current channel/power settings as deployed.
- Pull and document controller/management configurations (Aruba AirWave, Mist): SSIDs, authentication/segmentation, RF profiles, band-steering, client limits, and policy sets.
- Create as-built documentation: annotated floor plans, AP inventory lists, configuration baselines, network/SSID diagrams, and an exceptions log (mismatches, deprecated settings, or policy drift).
- Review findings with client stakeholders; capture action items and risks without delivering new design artifacts (e.g., no heat maps, signal-capacity reports, or new power plans).
- Adhere to site safety protocols (PPE, escorts, access windows) and complete required check-ins/permits.
- Provide concise daily progress notes and a final as-is documentation package at project close.
Qualifications
Must-Have
- Senior-level experience performing wireless surveys and RF documentation in production/industrial spaces.
- Hands-on familiarity with Aruba AirWave and Mist (reading/exporting configs, device inventories, and policy sets).
- Strong documentation skills: clear, client-ready reports, annotated floor plans, diagrams, and configuration summaries.
- Ability to walk the factory floor for extended periods; comfortable navigating ladders/mezzanines as permitted by safety policy.
Nice-to-Have
- Experience with survey/tooling (e.g., Ekahau/AirMagnet, Sidekick), spectrum analysis, and RF fundamentals across 2.4/5/6 GHz.
- Background in manufacturing or large campus wireless environments.
- Working knowledge of cabling standards/low-voltage coordination and facilities interfaces.
- Background check eligibility and adherence to EHS requirements.
