Aircraft Performance Engineer
Start the Best Work of Your Career at Boom
At Boom, we’re redefining what’s possible in aerospace. From XB-1, our supersonic demonstrator, to Overture, our revolutionary commercial airliner, we’ve proven that small, high-performing teams can achieve bold goals through technical rigor, creativity, and relentless execution.
We’re seeking a Performance Engineer to lead the development and analysis of aircraft performance across the full flight envelope. This is a dynamic, high-impact role where you’ll build physics-based models, evaluate real-world data, and support the development of operational products that define how the aircraft will fly in service.
From takeoff to supersonic cruise and final approach, you’ll ensure our aircraft meet and exceed performance, efficiency, and regulatory expectations. You’ll work closely with Flight Sciences, Certification, Flight Test, and Commercial teams to define performance standards and shape how our aircraft operates in real-world scenarios.
Role Overview
As a core member of our multidisciplinary engineering team, you will:
- Develop physics-based performance models for all phases of flight including takeoff, climb, subsonic and supersonic cruise, descent, approach, and landing
- Analyze wind tunnel and flight test data to refine and validate performance models
- Define mission profiles, aircraft limitations, and optimal routing strategies to inform aircraft design and operational planning
- Support the development of aircraft flight manuals, operating manuals, and other performance-related certification documentation
- Create and manage certification checklists and ensure alignment with 14 CFR Part 25 and other applicable standards
- Coordinate with certification authorities (FAA, EASA, etc.) on performance compliance, documentation, and verification efforts
- Support commercial and airline-facing teams with mission studies, routing scenarios, and aircraft capability assessments
- Collaborate with aerodynamicists, propulsion engineers, systems engineers, and pilots to integrate performance insights across the product lifecycle
- Maintain performance modeling tools and support the integration of these tools into broader design and analysis environments
The Ideal Candidate
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Solid understanding of aircraft aerodynamics, propulsion, and flight mechanics
- Experience developing and validating performance models for fixed-wing aircraft
- Familiarity with aircraft certification processes and associated documentation
- Proficiency in simulation and modeling tools such as MATLAB, Python, Simulink, or similar
- Experience working with wind tunnel and/or flight test data
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, including technical writing and stakeholder coordination
What Will Set You Apart
- Experience with supersonic or unconventional aircraft performance modeling
- Direct involvement in FAA/EASA certification projects or coordination with regulatory authorities
- Hands-on experience supporting Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) or performance related documents
- Understanding of airline operations, routing, or mission planning tools
- Experience with Flight Data Recorder (FDR) analysis, aircraft OPS, or other performance suites
- Demonstrates a strong work ethic and ambition, complemented by effective collaboration skills in a team setting
- Excels in a high-energy, independent, and challenging work environment
