Director of Autonomy Safety
BROOKSHIRE, TX
Bot Auto is seeking a Director of Autonomy Safety to develop and communicate our autonomous system safety framework. Reporting to the Vice President of Policy, this role will translate our technical safety achievements into comprehensive safety documentation and policies while collaborating with our engineering teams. This position focuses on creating convincing safety frameworks for external stakeholders based on our autonomous system development.
Key Responsibilities
- Create comprehensive safety frameworks and documentation that effectively communicate our autonomous system safety approach to external stakeholders, including a VSSA and safety cases that align with industry standards (ISO 21448/SOTIF, IEEE P2846)
- Develop compelling safety narratives using real-world route data and encounters to demonstrate safety performance to public audiences
- Collaborate with engineering teams to understand technical safety metrics and translate them into policy frameworks
- Support milestone-based deployment decisions by documenting safety validation approaches
- Support the Policy team in building relationships with regulatory stakeholders and first responders to effectively communicate our safety approach
- Document simulation and real-world testing methodologies in support of our safety case ● Synthesize engineering data, real-world encounters, and methodologies into clear safety narratives for various audiences
- Maintain knowledge of industry safety frameworks and emerging standards to inform policy development
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. or Master's degree in Robotics, Computer Science, System Engineering, or related field
- Minimum 3 years of experience in autonomous system safety policy and framework development
- Demonstrated ability to build consensus across technical teams and capture logical divergences
- Deep understanding of autonomous vehicle technology and safety validation approaches ● Strong background in safety policy development and regulatory frameworks ● Demonstrated ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences ● Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Practical experience applying FTA and FMEA in product development, with understanding of methodological limitations
- Knowledge of Bayesian statistics and machine learning applications in system analysis ● Experience with autonomous trucking or commercial vehicle applications ● Knowledge of commercial vehicle regulations and safety standards
- Experience engaging with regulatory agencies and law enforcement on autonomous vehicle policy
- Understanding of simulation-based testing and validation approaches
- Published research in autonomous system safety or validation
Collaborative Approach to Safety Integration
- Clear separation of responsibilities: The role focuses on safety policy and communication while maintaining close collaboration with technical engineering teams to ensure integration of safety considerations.
- Collaborative oversight: Key deliverables will be reviewed by cross-functional teams, including engineering, policy, and external advisors, to ensure alignment and team boundaries.
- Defined accountability: Regular reporting and updates will ensure transparency and adherence to organizational goals.
