Senior Software Backend Engineer
WHAT IS BOX?
Box is the world’s leading Content Cloud. We are trusted by more than 115K organizations around the world today, including nearly 70% of the Fortune 500 and leaders across deeply regulated industries (such as AstraZeneca, JLL, and Nationwide), to protect their data, fuel collaboration, and power critical workflows with secure, enterprise AI.
By joining Box, you will have the unique opportunity to continue driving our platform forward. Content powers how we work. It’s the billions of files and information flowing across teams, departments, and key business processes every single day: contracts, invoices, employee records, financials, product specs, marketing assets, and more. Our mission is to bring intelligence to the world of content management and empower our customers to completely transform workflows across their organizations. With the combination of AI and enterprise content, the opportunity has never been greater to transform how the world works together and at Box you will be on the front lines of this massive shift.
Founded in 2005, Box is headquartered in Redwood City, CA, and we have offices across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
WHY BOX NEEDS YOU?
At Box, we're looking for experienced Senior Software Engineers to join several of our backend teams. You’ll work on high-scale, distributed systems tackling complex engineering challenges—from performance optimization and auto-scaling microservices, to ensuring data integrity during large-scale migrations and maintaining search indexing accuracy.
Your work will directly impact how thousands of enterprise customers manage their most critical business content every day.
ABOUT THE TEAMS:
- The Shuttle team builds next-generation content migration tools that help customers move data quickly and securely from on-prem systems or competing clouds into Box. This strategic team focuses on speed, scalability, and metadata integrity—empowering customers to fully leverage Box’s intelligent content management immediately after migration.
- Governance & Compliance team creates scalable and reliable solutions to help customers meet complex compliance, legal, and regulatory mandates. The new Box Archive system enables a smarter way to retain, organize, and access documents—while minimizing clutter. Engineers here work on challenges that operate at Box-wide scale with a focus on security, reliability, and user trust.
- The Content Capabilities is a new and fast-growing team focused on expanding the capabilities of the Box Content Cloud. We build innovative platform features that power seamless collaboration and content management for millions of users. As we prepare to launch our first set of features, we’re looking for engineers who want to help define the future of content at Box.
- The Seat Growth & Retention team is a newly formed, high-impact group dedicated to increasing active users within existing customer accounts. They focus on building innovative tools and features that encourage customers to add more users and licenses. Additionally, they develop monitoring systems that use usage data to identify accounts at risk of churn. Our work directly supports driving user adoption and long-term customer success.
- The Device Security team at Box is responsible for protecting access to the ICM platform by ensuring that only trusted devices can connect. Their work is crucial to maintaining Box’s security and compliance, especially as businesses require more advanced controls over user access. This team focuses on building and maintaining secure, reliable systems that support enterprise-level security needs. They collaborate closely with product, security, and infrastructure teams to develop solutions that keep Box’s platform safe from unauthorized device access.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Develop new backend features focused on high scale and performance.
- Design and implement auto-scaling solutions for microservices.
- Solve challenges related to distributed systems at scale.
- Measure system performance; identify bottlenecks; optimize accordingly.
- Build internal tools supporting testing automation, deployment pipelines & product support.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams across geographies (Poland & USA).
- Participate actively in Agile ceremonies such as daily stand-ups and sprint planning.
- Contribute code reviews ensuring quality standards are met consistently.
- Participate in our on-call rotation, available at all times while on-call to help respond to and triage any issues that arise.
We are an AI-first company. This means you approach your work with a growth mindset and find ways to leverage AI to help make faster, smarter decisions that will 10X your impact at Box.
