Director, Strategic Communications and Advisory

Washington D.C.

Breakwater Strategy, a strategic insights and communications agency, is seeking an experienced professional to join our growing team of strategists. The ideal candidate will serve as a key client contact and strategic advisor across multiple industries, from energy to emerging technology, driving account teams forward and helping clients develop and execute communications strategies that achieve their business objectives.

We are looking for a growing leader who is experienced in media strategy and tactical execution, ideally in an agency setting, and is moving deeper into senior strategic thinking and counsel. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, demonstrates a natural proclivity to cultivating relationships with reporters, keeps a close eye on the news and policy developments that affect clients, and exercises strong judgment, particularly in moments of crisis and critical importance to our clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as co-lead on clients and projects, managing client relationships regularly and with ease, as well as managing tactical execution
  • Deliver strategic insights and advice to clients, both independently and alongside VPs, MDs, and Partners
  • Oversee the timely, precise production of client deliverables, thinking ahead and communicating next steps to teams without prompting
  • Develop and execute strategic communications plans, messaging frameworks, media strategies, and thought leadership initiatives
  • Build, maintain, and grow relationships with key reporters and media contacts across relevant beats
  • Proactively identify and respond to client needs, taking ownership and accountability for deliverables
  • Scan daily social, political, and economic news with an eye toward what might affect clients, and bring those insights to client teams
  • Help craft persuasive messaging and press materials, simplifying complex legislative, regulatory, or business issues for media audiences
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to junior staff, supporting their professional development

ATTRIBUTES

  • 5–10 years of relevant experience in strategic communications, public affairs, public policy, or management consulting
  • Bachelor's degree required. Previous agency experience a plus
  • Exceptional strategic thinking with the ability to translate complex issues into clear, compelling narratives for diverse audiences
  • Exercise resourcefulness and creativity — a “don’t take no for an answer” attitude — when faced with challenges and roadblocks
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills, with attention to detail and precision
  • Demonstrated experience leading client relationships and managing multiple engagements
  • Developing authority as a generalist across project types, or within a sector, practice area, or type of work
  • Consistently good judgment, professional maturity, and the confidence to offer candid, well-reasoned counsel
  • Commitment to continuous learning, including pursuing skills or experience that add value for clients
  • Ability to manage up and down effectively and lead teams by example
  • A collaborative mindset with a commitment to fostering a supportive team environment
