Field Technician (Contract – 4 Months)

We are seeking a Field Technician to support the installation, deployment, and operation of IoT sensors and edge devices across oil and gas customer sites in the Midland, Texas area. In this role, you will work alongside BrightAI’s field engineering team to install and validate sensor systems on compressors, pipelines, and other industrial equipment, while also helping manage the health and connectivity of deployed edge devices running Linux-based systems.
Our edge devices—Raspberry Pi and proprietary SBC/SoC boards—must stay online for extended periods of time. You will help ensure these devices are installed correctly in the field and remain operational by verifying connectivity, deploying scripts, and troubleshooting issues when they arise.
This is a 4-month contract role with the possibility of full-time employment based on performance.
Responsibilities
Field Deployment
- Support the installation and setup of BrightAI IoT sensors and edge hardware at customer sites, including compressors, pipelines, and related oil and gas infrastructure
- Work closely with BrightAI field engineers to execute deployment plans and ensure installations meet quality and safety standards
- Assist with wiring, mounting, and securing sensor equipment and related components in industrial environments
- Conduct system checks and basic troubleshooting to confirm devices are operating correctly after installation
Device Operations
- Access deployed edge devices securely using SSH over Tailscale to verify connectivity and system health
- Deploy and maintain operational Bash or Python scripts on devices
- Run and validate scripts to ensure sensors and devices are operating correctly and delivering reliable data
- Assist with Linux system maintenance including package management, service configuration, and OS updates
Monitoring & Troubleshooting
- Help monitor deployed devices and assist with troubleshooting remote failures or connectivity issues
- Verify logs and device data are being transmitted correctly to cloud storage systems such as AWS S3
- Document deployment results, incidents, and troubleshooting steps for internal teams
Operational Excellence
- Follow all safety protocols and site requirements while working in active industrial environments
- Coordinate with field teams and customer personnel to ensure smooth on-site operations
- Provide feedback to engineering teams to improve installation processes and device deployment workflows
Skills and Expertise
- 1–3+ years of hands-on technical or field experience (oil & gas, industrial, electrical, or similar environments)
- Comfortable working outdoors and on active industrial sites for extended periods of time
- Experience using basic tools for hardware installation, mounting equipment, and running cables
- Familiarity with Linux-based systems and basic system operations
- Experience using SSH to access remote devices
- Basic scripting experience in Python or Bash
- Understanding of basic networking concepts (TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS)
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical installation procedures
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a small field team
- Strong communication skills when working with both internal teams and customer personnel
Bonus
- Experience working in oil and gas field environments
- Familiarity with Raspberry Pi or other SBC/edge computing devices
- Experience with Tailscale, VPNs, or secure remote access tools
- Understanding of IoT sensors or industrial monitoring systems
- Basic knowledge of AWS or cloud-based logging systems
- Familiarity with wiring diagrams or electrical schematics
- OSHA or other relevant safety training
- Experience installing equipment on compressors, pipelines, or industrial machinery
