Lead Data Scientist

The Opportunity

As an ambitious and talented Senior Data Scientist joining our growing team, you will have experience of building machine learning solutions to solve complex business problems, ideally within a SAAS product focused environment. You will be adept at working through the full development pipeline from exploratory analysis to production, and comfortable working in a fast-paced  environment, where agility and resourcefulness are essential. You will have the opportunity to work in a culture that values autonomy and encourages novel and creative solutions to problems - not just the same old model development process. 

You are a team player working within the data science team and in collaboration with the product and engineering teams to develop innovative analytical solutions. You’ll ship a product that delivers  the best value for our customers in line with a clear company strategy with data science innovation as a core pillar of the product. 

You will work in classical machine learning tasks (classification, regression) as well as innovative Generative Ai applications.

*This is an individual contributor role and does not involve people management.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Own the model development process from initial exploratory analysis and proof of concept through to production. You will be the catalyst that starts and progresses the development process and work in collaboration with colleagues to bring this to deployment
  • Develop classification, regression and clustering models as appropriate to solve business problems
  • Apply generative models to generate text, reports and insights as part of exciting new product features
  • Analyse natural language text to uncover insights and transform data
  • Develop proof of concepts to business problems including research of novel machine learning techniques and libraries to solve business problems
  • Work with engineering colleagues to deploy models and AI solutions to production

 

Skills & Experience

To be successful in the role, you need:

  • 5+ Years developing machine learning models and solutions, ideally in a software product focused environment
  • Strong programming skills in Python
  • Strong skills in NLP, foundational representations like TFIDF matrices and topic modelling as well familiarity with Word2vec, Transformers etc... Experience working with text embeddings for data extraction, classification etc..
  • Some familiarity with generative ai text based applications and frameworks, in particular applying generative ai models to product application development. Knowledge of frameworks such as langchain or llamaindex  may be useful but not essential. Similarly familiarity with patterns like RAG would be beneficial but not essential
  • Application of classification techniques to multiclass and multi label classification. 
  • Familiarity with base Python stack such as Numpy,SciPy, Sklearn and experience developing Neural Network models in Keras/Tensorflow/PyTorch. 
  • Application of regression techniques to predict continuous outcomes. Some familiarity with Time Series forecasting is also a plus.
  • Clustering and segmentation analysis is also beneficial, familiarity with core algorithms like KMeans, DbScan etc.. 
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity in a fast-paced product environment
  • A passion for building product-focused solutions that solve customer problems
  • A track record of shipping product by working collaboratively with product and software engineering teams
  • Ability to work autonomously

The following are a bonus!

  • Experience deploying machine learning systems to the cloud is beneficial In particular experience working with AWS machine learning stack as well as some familiarity with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins/AWS Codebuild/Bitbucket pipelines/Github actions
  • Experience working with docker and containerised environments is a plus ; also some bash scripting experience and linux shell knowledge is advantageous. Experience working in a shared code repository with version control using git
  • Some experience of dashboard tools such as PowerBi/Qlik/Tableau a plus but not necessary
