Commodity Buyer

As a Commodity Buyer at SBSI, you’ll play a critical role in selecting, negotiating, and purchasing essential materials like lumber, panels, building materials, hardlines, and millwork to support our company’s growth and success.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage Purchase Requests: Efficiently process requests for materials, supplies, services, and equipment, ensuring alignment with company needs.
- Analyze Needs & Source Suppliers: Use inventory data and collaborate with department leaders to assess needs, then source and evaluate supplier bids based on price, availability, quality, and delivery.
- Supplier & Vendor Relationships: Establish and maintain strong partnerships with suppliers to guarantee quality and timely delivery of materials, while also exploring new vendor relationships to support company objectives.
- Inventory Coordination: Partner with the Supply Chain team to manage inventory levels and maintain an accurate inventory management system.
- Pricing & Cost Management: Execute pricing negotiations, apply cost-control strategies, and collaborate with Finance to ensure vendors are paid in line with purchase orders.
- Problem-Solving: Quickly address and resolve any supplier issues, including coordinating product returns and credit processing as needed.
- Reporting & Data Management: Draft regular inventory and purchasing reports to keep management informed of buying activities and inventory status.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Finance, or a related field (preferred).
- 3+ years of experience in material planning, inventory management, or purchasing.
- Familiarity with lean techniques and experience in the building materials industry are a plus.
- Proficiency with Bistrack ERP and relevant certifications (APICS CPIM or CPM) is beneficial.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, sometimes high-pressure environment.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
- Proficient with Bistrack, Microsoft Office, and vendor management software.
- Ability to think strategically and apply strong business and financial acumen.
- Strong project and time management capabilities.
