Editorial Director

Department: Creative Studio
Reports to: Senior Director, Creative & Content
Base Salary: 160,000-182,500

Summary

The Editorial Director leads ButcherBox’s copy and editorial practice, shaping the stories the brand tells and ensuring its established voice comes to life with clarity and consistency.

This leader will own the content strategy and story arc across the brand—determining which stories ButcherBox should tell and connecting campaigns, product stories, editorial content, and everyday customer communications into one clear and compelling narrative. They will steward, apply, and flex the ButcherBox voice across every touchpoint, ensuring it remains distinctive and human without becoming formulaic.

At the heart of the role is leadership of the copy team. The Editorial Director will set a high creative and editorial bar, provide clear and constructive critique, establish priorities, and help each writer grow. They will also remain close to the work, contributing directly to select high-priority assignments such as campaign concepts, scripts, and voiceovers.

The ideal candidate combines editorial instinct, conceptual creativity, and strategic thinking. They have strong taste, an exceptional ear for language, and the ability to make complex ideas clear and engaging. They bring an investigative mindset and the tenacity to uncover stories that are not neatly packaged—seeking out information, connecting disparate inputs, and shaping them into compelling narratives. They will help ButcherBox grow from a trusted source for high-quality protein into a richer food and lifestyle brand through stories about sourcing, cooking, recipes, people, culture, and the everyday rituals and experiences that surround a meal.

This role sits on the Creative team and works closely with Design, Video, Brand, Social, CRM, Growth, and other partners across Marketing.

What you’ll do

  • Own the brand’s content strategy, defining the stories, audiences, formats, and role each channel plays in building a cohesive narrative over time.
  • Own the story arc across the brand, proactively uncovering stories, connecting disparate information, and shaping campaigns, product stories, editorial content, and everyday communications into a meaningful larger narrative.
  • Steward, apply, and flex the ButcherBox voice across campaigns, web, CRM, paid media, organic social, packaging, video, retail, partnerships, and customer experience.
  • Lead the adoption and consistent application of the voice established through the ButcherBox rebrand.
  • Lead campaign messaging and narrative development from early concept through final execution, working with the design team to develop verbal and visual ideas together.
  • Make complex subjects—including sourcing standards, animal welfare, food quality, cooking, convenience, and the food system—clear, human, and compelling.
  • Lead, manage, and develop the copy team, creating clarity around roles, priorities, expectations, and growth.
  • Set the creative and editorial bar, providing thoughtful critique that strengthens both the work and the writers producing it.
  • Define the editorial roadmap, including ownership of the ButcherBox blog, and identify the stories, formats, and recurring franchises the brand is uniquely positioned to create.
  • Write and shape select high-priority scripts, voiceovers, manifestos, campaign concepts, and other important expressions of the brand voice.
  • Work with producers, directors, editors, motion designers, and talent to ensure writing, performance, sound, pacing, and visuals tell one cohesive story.
  • Use audience insight and content performance to inform decisions while maintaining a strong editorial point of view.
  • Present strategies, concepts, and creative work to senior leaders and cross-functional partners with clarity and conviction.

What you bring

  • 10+ years of experience in copy, editorial, brand storytelling, or a related creative discipline, including meaningful experience leading writers.
  • Experience owning content strategy and connecting stories across channels, formats, and stages of the customer journey.
  • Experience stewarding and scaling a distinctive voice for a consumer brand across a wide range of touchpoints.
  • A portfolio demonstrating exceptional writing and conceptual thinking across campaigns, digital experiences, scripts, voiceovers, and editorial storytelling.
  • Strong editorial judgment and a clear point of view on what makes content resonate, how ideas travel across social and other channels, and what is distinctive enough for a brand to own.
  • The curiosity, resourcefulness, and persistence to seek out people, information, and details rather than waiting for a fully formed story or brief.
  • The ability to lead and develop writers with empathy, rigor, and clear expectations.
  • Experience developing integrated ideas with design and creative partners rather than treating copy as a downstream deliverable.
  • A strong ear for spoken language and experience writing for video, performance, or other audio-led formats.
  • The ability to move comfortably between setting direction, providing critique, presenting to senior stakeholders, and contributing directly to priority work.
  • Genuine curiosity about food, cooking, sourcing, culture, and the role food plays in people’s lives. Experience in food, lifestyle, hospitality, or another culturally relevant consumer category is a plus.

How you’ll work

You will lead the copy and editorial discipline within the Creative team, working closely with designers and other creative partners to ensure words and visuals create one cohesive brand experience across every customer touchpoint.

Success in this role requires both leadership and participation: setting direction, developing the team, creating the conditions for excellent work, and stepping in directly when your perspective or craft can make the work meaningfully stronger.
