Backend Engineer

📣  A bit about the role:

As part of the Platform Operations team, you will work closely with engineers, product managers and stakeholders to help solve our customers' problems and directly impact their (and their dog's) daily lives. As a Backend Engineer in this team, you'll contribute to a number of key, complex operations projects that play a huge part in the growth of Butternut. 

In this role, you can expect to:

  • Work across the backend stack to deliver quality, maintainable code.   
  • Collaborate and learn with other team members via pair programming, mentoring, code reviews, and technical talks.
  • Learn about and champion best practices in code, architecture & processes.

You'll get to use a lot of exciting technology here at Butternut including:

  • Ruby on Rails
  • Postgresql
  • Heroku
  • AWS
  • Terraform
  • Github Actions for CI/CD

Here are some of the projects this team have worked on recently:

  • A feature that enables customers to choose their preferred courier 
  • Building the technical infrastructure that underpinned our new market launch in Germany 

👋  A bit about you:

  • Commercial experience in a similar backend engineering position, on a Ruby on Rails stack (this role is suitable for someone with roughly 3-5 years experience)
  • An interest in developing your skills with a real willingness to learn and get stuck in on technical problems 
  • A true motivation to ship platform projects that have a direct impact on operations. 
  • Pro-active, driven, entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Obsessed with dogs, naturally.

  • This role can be either hybrid (we have a lovely office in West London), or remote in the UK. 
  • The interview process is as follows: Initial call with our internal recruiter, a take home technical challenge, a technical interview and a values (team) interview. These are all conducted remotely.
