Social Media Manager - Mat Cover

London

📣 A bit about the role:

At Butternut Box, we’re on a mission to deliver health and happiness to dogs and their humans everywhere. As the European market leader in fresh dog food, we’ve built an award-winning brand by challenging the status quo - advocating for better ingredients and a cooking method that does right by dogs.

We are looking for a creative, data-savvy, and platform-native Social Media Manager to join us on a maternity cover basis (min. 12 months).

Social media is a core part of our community and in many ways our shop-face as an omni-channel company. In this role, you’ll be a key driver of our brand’s cultural relevancy. You will be responsible for executing an organic social strategy that turns dog parents into lifelong Butternutters, with content that our audiences want to engage with, is culturally fluent and relevant, and that works with the algorithm not against it. You’ll bring a deep understanding of our priority platforms and how organic social can fuel our broader growth goals, acting as a witty copywriter and visual storyteller.

We are bolstering our Social Media team by hiring a Head of Social & Community, and so you will report to them once they’re in their post, but in the meantime will report directly to our Global Head of Brand.

In this role you can expect to…

  • Execute the Organic Social Strategy: You’ll be the hands-on driver of our presence across our priority channels in Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, whilst ensuring a regular drumbeat of activity across our lower-priority platforms. Your role will be to ensure every post serves a purpose - whether that’s driving brand love or educating on the benefits of Fresh.
  • Identify Trends and Data-Led Insights: You’ll use your ‘platform-native’ instincts to spot trends early, but you’ll use data to prove they work through testing. You’ll move beyond vanity metrics to analyse how organic social fuels our broader growth and brand health.
  • Create at the Speed of Social: Working hand-in-hand with our Video Content Creator, in-house Creative Studio, and agency partners, you’ll brief, capture, critically appraise, and edit content that’s aligned to our brand & values, native to each platform, and delivers our goals. You’ll know when to go high-production and when a lo-fi iPhone video will perform better.
  • Act as a Witty Brand Guardian: You’ll craft copy that is sharp, funny, and deeply human. You'll capture the essence of our Tone of Bark, whilst pushing the boundaries where relevant, whether we’re jumping on a trending meme or talking about the science of dog nutrition.
  • Manage the Social Ecosystem: You’ll have full oversight of our organic social presence in the UK, and support our international markets with content sharing or producing global toolkits. You’ll go from owning the content calendar to helping our Community Coordinator amplify our content through community engagement, and developing creator briefs, you’ll ensure the ‘shop-face’ of Butternut Box is always fresh, engaging, and polished (when it needs to be).
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: You’ll work closely with the wider Brand, Creative, Marketing, and CRM teams to ensure organic social isn't a silo, but a key amplifier for our UK & Ireland marketing plans, as well as our Brand Managers across our international markets to drive creative efficiency. You’ll also get to work with our brilliant ambassadors, creators, and talent partners.

👋 A bit about you…

  • Experienced Social Strategist: You have a proven track record of managing social media for a fast-growth B2C or DTC brand. You are comfortable owning the strategy, seeing the bigger picture of how social integrates into a wider brand ecosystem.
  • Platform-Native Expert: You have a deep, intuitive understanding of Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube especially, and have the acumen to get up to speed fast on channels that are more new to you. You know how to navigate their algorithms, use SEO to your advantage, and you’re likely an avid user of these platforms yourself.
  • Witty & Sharp Copywriter: You have a refined editorial ear; you can switch between ‘informative pet-health expert’ and ‘ a dog parent’s internet best friend’ whilst ensuring the essence of our Tone of Bark is always considered.
  • A Creative Catalyst: You are a natural at idea generation and social-first thinking. You don’t just follow trends but can adapt and build on them. You’re also comfortable shaping and leading creative brainstorms, bringing structure and inspiration to get the best ideas out of the teams you partner with.
  • An Eye for Creative Direction & Feed Aesthetic: While you don’t need to be a professional editor, you are a skilled "mobile-first" creator. You are adept at using tools like CapCut or Canva, have tested emerging AI tools, and more importantly, you know how to give a critically appraised brief to a professional Video Creator or agency.
  • Commercially & Data Minded: You’re comfortable diving into Dash Social (or similar) to find the data and insight that matters. You also enjoy testing hypotheses, with experience adopting or embedding content feedback loops, and can articulate how organic social activity translates into brand health and long-term growth.
  • An Expert Collaborator: You thrive in a cross-functional, multi-market environment. You’re as comfortable chatting with our Marketing team about attribution as you are guiding international Brand Managers on creative development.
  • For the Love of Dogs: Most importantly, you get dog people, and probably are one yourself. You understand and believe in our mission and are excited to be the voice of a brand that puts dogs at the forefront.
