Overview of the Role
- We’re looking for a highly skilled and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our collaborative and fast-paced Accounting team. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals and be exposed to a wide variety of accounting processes and tasks.
- The Staff Accountant will take full ownership of their assigned responsibilities within key accounting functions—including month-end close, billing, accounts payable, and reconciliations—while contributing to the overall accuracy, process integrity, and success of the team. This role plays an active part in supporting cross-functional collaboration and driving strong financial outcomes across the organization.
- Salary range $55,000 - $75,000 based on experience, qualifications and skills
- Location: Hybrid in-office 3 days a week; Chicago, IL

What You'll Do at C.A. Fortune
Accounting
- Assist in preparing journal entries for accruals, prepaids, and other general ledger activities under supervision.
- Support the month-end and year-end close process by gathering data and performing basic reconciliations.
- Help maintain general ledger accounts and ensure proper coding of transactions.
- Perform entry-level balance sheet reconciliations and assist with variance research as needed.
- Respond to internal inquiries and help manage the shared accounting inbox.
- Ensure adherence to accounting policies, procedures, and standards.
- Support ad-hoc financial projects, system improvements, and process documentation
Client Billing
- Assist with reviewing customer contracts for billing requirements.
- Help generate invoices based on provided data and completed services.
- Validate basic invoice elements such as pricing, taxes, and payment terms.
- Assist with posting customer payments and reconciling accounts.
- Maintain AR aging schedules and support basic collections outreach.
- Contribute to monthly AR and revenue close activities.
Accounts Payable
- Support coding and entry of vendor invoices to appropriate GL accounts and departments.
- Assist in securing invoice approvals and preparing payment batches.
- Respond to vendor inquiries and assist with resolving discrepancies.
- Help prepare AP reports for month-end close.
Payroll
- Assist in payroll-related audits and reconciliation efforts.
- Support validation of payroll data such as hours and deductions.
- Help reconcile payroll-related GL accounts and prepare entries as directed.
- Work with the payroll team to ensure data accuracy and proper employee classification.
- Maintain confidentiality of payroll data and related documentation.
What You Should Bring to the Table
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- 0-1 years of accounting experience
- Strong Excel skills and willingness to learn accounting software (experience with Sage Intacct or ADP is a plus)
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a deadline-driven environment
- Eagerness to learn and grow within the role
- Comfortable working in a deadline-driven, collaborative environment.
