Lair Science Camp Developer

Berkeley, CA & Pinecrest, CA

The Cal Alumni Association (CAA) is seeking a passionate and motivated recent Cal graduate to join our team in a critical role supporting the development and delivery of an outdoor education program held at the Lair of the Golden Bear in Pinecrest, CA. 

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in the biological sciences, an enthusiasm for outdoor learning, and a commitment to fostering environmental awareness and sustainability. This role provides a unique opportunity to combine scientific knowledge with hands-on experience in curriculum development, K–12 school outreach, and outdoor education programming. 

You will play a key role in supporting the development of a new outdoor education curriculum aligned with California’s teaching standards, assisting with outreach to schools and teachers, and delivering engaging in-school programming. Additionally, you will help organize and coordinate a 10 separate one-week long outdoor immersion programs for 6th grade students from Bay Area public and private schools, and assist with evaluating the outcomes of our program. This immersive field program will be hosted at the Lair of the Golden Bear in Spring 2026.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Development Support: Assist in the development of an outdoor education curriculum based on Next Generation Science Standards for California Public Schools, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve (CA NGSS), integrating concepts in natural history, environmental sciences, and sustainability. 
  • Outreach & Relationship Building: Support efforts to engage with local educators by helping to facilitate communication and outreach with different school programs. 
  • In-School Program Delivery: Deliver engaging, hands-on in-school programming (as needed) to students, including interactive lessons on biological sciences, ecology, and natural history, to help prepare students for the outdoor education program. 
  • Program Evaluation: Assist in the development of criteria for evaluating program effectiveness through pre- and post-program surveys and reflections, to ensure continuous improvement of the programming. 
  • Outdoor Immersion Program Coordination: Help coordinate outdoor education experiences, to ensure safety and success for all student participants. 
  • General Support: Provide additional support for program activities, including event planning, training undergraduate students, social media development, and other tasks as needed. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: Recent graduate with a bachelor’s degree in biological science, environmental science, or a related field.

Skills/Relevant Experience/Desirable Attributes:

  • Strong communication and organization skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with educators, students, and colleagues
  • Interest and enthusiasm for teaching and outdoor environmental education
  • Some experience or familiarity working with school-aged children
  • Basic knowledge of California’s teaching standards
  • Ability to work independently, while also being a collaborative team member

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid CA driver’s licence
  • California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) certification (available online through UC Learning Center; to be acquired within one month of hire)
  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR certification (funding available; to be acquired within two months of hire)

Work Environment

This position will primarily involve both in-office and outdoor work. You will be expected to spend time working directly with students in a variety of settings, including in-class and outdoors in Pinecrest. You will be supervised by the UC Berkeley Natural Reserves Coordinating Faculty Director and have weekly meetings with the Associate Director. You will also work closely with graduate student fellows supporting the program, and with the Lair’s Science Camp Manager to coordinate logistics and to ensure the success of the program.

Since 1949, the Cal Alumni Association’s Lair of the Golden Bear has provided unforgettable summer vacations for generations of Cal alumni families and friends of the University. Located just three hours east of the Bay Area at 5,600 feet in beautiful Pinecrest, the Lair’s fresh air, sunshine, and surrounding natural beauty provide our guests with an amazing mountain playground. In addition to family camp, the Lair hosts numerous other programs and sessions. This role will be focused on supporting the Lair’s spring and fall Science Camp program for middle school students.

Salary

This position is classified as an at-will, full-time, non-exempt position. The pay range will be between $25-26/hr.
