Director, Coalitions & Member Experience

Who we are

Campus Compact is a national coalition of colleges and universities committed to the public purposes of higher education. As the largest national higher education association dedicated solely to higher education civic and community engagement, Campus Compact enables higher education institutions to develop students’ citizenship skills and forge effective community partnerships. Our resources support senior administrators, faculty, staff, and students as they pursue community-based teaching, scholarship, and action in the service of positive change.

Today, we stand at a defining moment: we are ready to scale our impact when the stakes for our work have never been higher. We know that higher education has a critical role to play in fostering democratic principles and culture by addressing polarization, strengthening civic participation, and ensuring students are prepared to navigate and shape our democracy. Thanks to the investment of philanthropic partners, Campus Compact is preparing for a period of significant growth and expansion, particularly in the areas of innovation, scaling, and coalition building.

About the role

The Director of Coalitions & Member Experience owns member value realization, with particular attention to how institutions experience Campus Compact, derive meaning from participation, and choose to remain engaged over time. Sitting at the intersection of relationship management, engagement strategy, and coalition infrastructure, this role serves as the primary steward of member retention and renewal strategy, member leadership pathways, and coalition vitality.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Membership, this position ensures that engagement is intentional, sequenced, and responsive to institutional context, and that member voice meaningfully informs organizational priorities, programs, and structures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Member Engagement Lifecycle (Onboarding → Renewal)
    • Design and oversee the end-to-end member engagement journey, from onboarding through renewal decision points.
    • Ensure engagement touchpoints are purposeful, well-timed, and aligned with institutional needs and capacity.
    • Partner with Systems & Analytics to monitor engagement patterns, identify gaps or drop-off points, and inform strategic adjustments.
  • Renewal Strategy & Retention Risk Mitigation
    • Develop renewal strategy, including messaging, timing, and escalation pathways that reflect member value, engagement history, and institutional context.
    • Coordinate renewal timelines with Recruitment (invoicing), Finance (reconciliation), and senior leadership.
    • Identify retention risk early and deploy targeted outreach, relationship repair, or engagement adjustments to support continuity.
  • Coalition & Network Infrastructure
    • Design and steward coalition structures that enable peer learning, shared leadership, and collective action, including Campus Champions, Affinity Networks, Advisory Boards, and the Virtual Member Hub.
    • Ensure coalition spaces are active, purposeful, and aligned with member needs and strategic priorities.
  • Member Relationship Management
    • Serve as the primary relationship owner for complex, high-touch, or strategically significant member institutions.
    • Navigate nuanced institutional dynamics with sound judgment, discerning positions versus underlying interests.
    • Partner with the Senior Coordinator to ensure continuity, follow-through, and a consistent, high-quality member experience.
    • Establish formal and informal mechanisms to gather member insight, including feedback, advisory input, and engagement signals.
    • Translate member voice into actionable recommendations for programs, coalitions, and organizational leadership.
  • Team Leadership & Internal Coordination
    • Supervise, support, and develop full-time and contract staff, including the Senior Coordinator for Coalitions and Member Experience, ensuring clarity of roles, priorities, and accountability.
    • Foster a team culture grounded in collaboration, shared responsibility, learning, and care, with attention to sustainable workload management and clear communication.
    • Provide coaching, professional development, and backup coverage as needed to ensure continuity, resilience, and excellence in member-facing work.
    • Serve as the secondary leader of the Membership team, representing the Senior Director of Membership in internal and external settings as needed, and supporting alignment across recruitment, engagement, and retention functions.
    • Take on other responsibilities as needed and appropriate
