Position Purpose
The Credit Apprentice will work within the Credit Department to support the daily financial analysis and credit functions of the Bank while gaining foundational knowledge in commercial banking and underwriting. This entry-level role is designed to further the apprentice’s education, analytical skills, and long-term career potential within the business finance and credit industry through structured training and hands-on experience.

Position Responsibilities

The Credit Apprentice will support the Credit team through the following developmental objectives:

  • Complete an in‑depth banking and credit training program to build a strong foundation in financial concepts, terminology, and processes applied throughout the apprenticeship.
  • Gain an introduction to personal financial statement review and guarantor analysis, including spreading guarantor financial information using Excel‑based templates for commercial and consumer loan requests.
    • The apprentice will work directly with a Credit Analyst and Credit staff who will provide guidance and oversight throughout the guarantor spreading process.
  • Gain an introduction to business financial statement review and business analysis, including completing financial spreads using the Bank’s approved spreading software for commercial loan requests.
    • The apprentice will work closely with Credit Analysts and Underwriters to learn the process of spreading business financials accurately and consistently.
  • Conduct research and data mining using key loan and credit documents from the Bank’s core systems and shared sites to capture, validate, and record portfolio data into formatted Excel reports for upload into the Bank’s portfolio management and reporting systems.
  • Develop familiarity with foundational commercial loan documentation, including loan presentation summaries, financial analysis, collateral analysis, and basic credit risk rating concepts.
  • Receive exposure to the commercial lending lifecycle, including the application through origination process, and observe the Bank’s Management Loan Committee meetings to better understand credit decision‑making.
  • Gain exposure to the underwriting processes, tools, and workflows used by the Bank to assess business risk, with increasing opportunities to assist with financial analysis packages.
  • Build an understanding of commercial loan portfolio risk reporting and the Bank’s risk management practices.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Current enrollment in a related undergraduate degree program such as Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field.
  • No prior banking or credit experience required.

 

Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work with Excel‑based templates, data entry worksheets, and formulas.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Above‑average verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask effectively and manage competing priorities in a deadline‑driven environment.
  • Strong willingness to learn and accept coaching and feedback.

Compensation

  • Base Salary Range: Hourly paid position. Final determination of where you are at in the salary range is based on numerous factors such as geographical location, relevant experience, skill set, education, and ability to meet qualifications within the job description. 

Working Arrangements

  • Full Time Position
  • This is a hybrid role expected to work in office on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. You will be able to work remotely on Wednesday.
  • This role will be based out of our Rockville, MD headquarters location.
