Chief Financial Officer (CFO) / Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Role Summary:

The CFO/COO for a 501(c)(6) global trade association will serve as a dual-role executive responsible for overseeing both the financial and operational functions of a non-profit business association. This position is split evenly, with 50% of time dedicated to financial leadership and 50% to operational management. The CFO/COO will ensure financial sustainability, compliance, and strategic growth, while also optimizing organizational effectiveness and service delivery. The role is virtual with less than 20% travel.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required
  • Master’s degree (MBA, or equivalent) preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant preferred

Experience:

  • 10+ years in senior financial and operational roles, ideally in non-profit settings
  • Experience as a VP of Finance, Finance Director, or Controller
  • Proven track record in budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and capital structure decisions
  • Experience managing relationships with bankers, auditors, and board members
  • Experience leading high-performing teams under pressure and resolving internal organizational conflicts
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills to partner effectively with the CEO, executive leadership team and Board
  • Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting, regulatory compliance, and best operational practices
  • Sustainability experience preferred

Skills and Competencies:

  • Expertise in budgeting, rolling forecasts, and predictive analytics to drive business decisions
  • Oversee the billing, collection, and recognition of member dues, which is the primary revenue source
  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget, including forecasting revenue
  • The ability to partner with the CEO to shape long-term business strategy and execute organizational initiatives
  • Translate the board's strategic plan into actionable operational goals and workflows
  • Leading the organization through transitions, whether technological, operational, or strategic
  • Distilling complex information into clear, actionable insights for diverse stakeholders, including the board of directors and employees
  • Promote a positive organizational culture and staff development
