Application Engineering Intern
As an Application Engineering Intern, you’ll have the chance to make a meaningful impact by designing revolutionary products across consumer, footwear and medical sectors. You’ll bring design ideas to life through Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis™ (DLS) 3D printing technology – helping customers and internal stake-holders move from concept sketches to physical prototypes and production-ready parts.
This is an incredible opportunity to apply your design skills in a real-world setting. You’ll work alongside some of the best minds in software, materials, hardware and manufacturing and leave the internship with hands-on experience across the entire product development lifecycle.
This role is based in our Redwood City, CA US headquarters office.
You will...
- Design and prototype innovative parts for market-relevant applications using Carbon’s DLS printing process
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing and Engineering teams to translate market insights into compelling product solutions
- Take the lead on specific application development efforts, with close guidance and mentorship from senior members of the Application Engineering team
- Apply a hypothesis-driven approach to iterate quickly – define problems, prototype solutions, gather feedback and refine
- Support all stages of product development including CAD modeling, mesh cleanup, print preparation, printing and post processing
- Assist in communicating design intent and progress internally and contribute to customer-facing discussions as needed
- Thoroughly document requirements, iterations, design rationales and key learnings
- Currently be pursuing a BS or MS in Product Design, Engineering, Industrial Design or a related field
You have...
- Interest in developing products from early concept through prototyping and refinement
- Proficiency with CAD and design software such as Rhino, Grasshopper, Blender, Onshape, Solidworks, Magics or others
- Ability to create realistic renderings and openness to exploring AI-based design tools to inspire and evolve product concepts
- Eagerness to learn Carbon’s proprietary Design Engine software and collaborate with the AE team to deepen your understanding
- Creative and adaptable problem solver, able to navigate ambiguity and rapidly iterate on design solutions
- Familiarity with Python or other programming tools is a plus
- Strong visual, verbal and written communication skills
- A detail-oriented with a growth mindset and a strong sense of ownership

At Carbon, we look at the person holistically and carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining compensation. The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $45.00 per hour. Your actual salary will be based on your experience, work location, certifications and the unique skills you bring to the role.
