The Role

We are seeking a power and energy systems modeling expert to support our expanding portfolio of work on decarbonizing the electric grid. The primary focus will be on power system modeling, and strong candidates will have deep familiarity with running and interpreting capacity expansion and production cost (unit commitment and dispatch) models at both national and sub-national scales. In addition to being able to initialize and run relevant models effectively, candidates should be able to clearly explain the assumptions and boundary conditions used in modeling and describe the implications of the results to stakeholders, such as corporate sustainability officers and investment professionals. Familiarity with energy system modeling beyond the electricity sector is a plus. Our work environment is collaborative, fast-paced, and may require travel. We are a dynamic, rapidly growing organization that values flexibility, curiosity, and the ability to work effectively both in teams and independently. We are seeking a self-starter who stays informed about regulatory, policy, and technological developments in electricity decarbonization and is excited to work hard toward implementing effective, scalable, and just climate change solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Implement high-quality power system modeling, with an emphasis on capacity expansion, unit commitment, and economic dispatch models, as well as their implications for electricity decarbonization.
  • Collaborate across our science and technology teams to adopt and/or develop frameworks, processes, and tools for managing flexible energy system modeling, with a focus on electricity but potentially extending to other sectors, including sector coupling / multi-sector modeling.
  • Advise clients on implications for decarbonization strategies resulting from power and energy system modeling and analysis.
  • Help identify emerging risks and challenges to power and energy systems, as well as potential solutions to address them.
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in power and energy system modeling, including policy changes and best practices.
  • Generate insights and thought leadership from power and energy system modeling, client engagements, and global trends.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a field related to sustainability, or a bachelor’s degree with demonstrated experience in power system modeling.
  • Work experience in a position whose primary responsibilities include the authorship, review, and/or acceptance of results from power system modeling.
  • Proficiency with one or more commercial and/or open-source power system modeling tools, such as PyPSA, GenX, ReEDS, and PLEXOS.
  • Knowledge of the fundamental principles of power and energy system modeling and their application in the private sector.
  • Familiarity with how power and energy system modeling are used in the utility integrated resource planning process.
  • General familiarity with policy frameworks that impact the electric grid.
  • General familiarity with corporate carbon accounting frameworks, particularly Scope 2.
  • General familiarity with software development principles.
  • Proficiency in general office software, including spreadsheets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical information into client deliverables.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-growing international environment.
  • Knowledge of electricity decarbonization technologies or experience working in the climate technology space is a strong plus.
  • We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds.
