Role Summary:

The Mechanical Engineer III is responsible for shaping and strengthening the mechanical/thermal engineering development for CARIAD and VW Group. This role will help define, develop and deliver production ECU in embedded environment for High performance computing platform for VW Group in order to create in-house development expertise for connected infotainment.

The Mechanical Engineer III will help identify and scope projects around innovation opportunities as well as technology risks and provide engineering knowledge and mentor team members in areas of expertise.

Role Responsibilities:

Mechanical/Thermal design – 

  • Help design full product design life cycle including requirements gathering, concept generation, detailed design with analysis, verification testing, cross-functional reviews, and manufacturing release.
  • Design packaging and components that optimize airflow management, coolant and refrigerant flow management, and thermal actuator mounting, optimizing for efficiency, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability
  • Develop mechanical design for components and assemblies, including plastics, sheet metal, structural metals, insulation systems, sealing methods, fluid connectors, fasteners, busbars, and other components, with hands on prototyping
  • Develop and execute component and subsystem design validation plans and test methods to validate product adherence to requirements
  • Create high quality drawing packages and manufacturing instructions for parts and assemblies
  • Collaborate with thermal, systems, electrical, supply chain, manufacturing, service/deployment teams, and reliability teams to take designs from prototype through mass production
  • Assist in engineering prototype builds and component fabrication
  • Troubleshoot, root cause and resolve design, test and production failures.

Stakeholder and Operational Management - 

  • Support the relationship with contract manufacturer, and lead strategic discussions and negotiations.
  • Monitor compliance with relevant regulations, statutes, Board Directives, process standards (including in respect of Golden Rules and Product Compliance), procedural/operating instructions and occupational safety regulations using appropriate management controls (dual-control principle).
  • Identify and mitigate project technology risks and execution risks  

​Required Specialized Skills:

  • Proficiency in using RF test equipment (e.g., network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators)
  • Strong understanding of RF circuit design, impedance matching, and transmission line theory
  • Experience in PCB design for RF applications, including layout best practices for high-frequency circuits
  • Familiarity with wireless communication standards (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE, 5G).
  • Knowledge of EMI/EMC mitigation techniques for RF systems. Knowledge of embedded system software architecture, real-time operating systems, and web framework components and its interfaces
  • Knowledge of connected HPC software components and its peripherals
  • Knowledge of connected vehicle infotainment and communication software systems.
  • Programming languages C, C++, Java, HTML5, and script languages

​Desired Skills:

  • Experience with RF simulation tools (e.g., ADS, HFSS, CST, or similar)
  • Knowledge of low-noise amplifiers (LNA), power amplifiers (PA), and RF filters
  • Experience in automated RF testing and scripting (Python, MATLAB)
  • Background in automotive, aerospace, or IoT RF applications

​Workplace Flexibility:

  • ​Travel to worldwide locations required, less than 25% 

​Years of Relevant Experience:

  • 5+ years of Mechanical/Thermal design/development experience of automotive ECUs

​Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related fields

Compensation

Salary range is dependent on factors such as geographical differentials, credentials or certifications, industry-based experience, qualification and training. In the city of Mountain View, CA, the salary range for this position is 132,000 - 185,333.
