AI Engineer, Healthcare
Cascala Health is dedicated to revolutionizing care transitions by bridging communication gaps between hospital discharge and post-acute care. Our comprehensive platform facilitates meaningful engagement across care teams, activating personalized interventions to prevent hospital readmissions and promote long-term health for patients in risk-based care models.
About the Role:
We are seeking an AI Engineer to join our team and focus on integrating (and fine-tuning) AI/ML models, to extract, transform, and structure clinical data from various sources, such as PDFs generated from EMR/EHR systems. You will leverage these models and integrate them into our platform to ensure seamless data extraction, transformation and outputs while adhering to industry regulations.
This role is crucial in streamlining the platform’s ability to convert complex and unstructured clinical data into actionable insights that healthcare providers can use in the transitional care management (TCM) process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Model Integration: Integrate existing pre-trained (or fine tune) AI models, including NLP and LLMs, into the platform to extract relevant data from structured and unstructured sources (e.g., PDFs, clinical documents).
- Data Transformation: Develop workflows to transform extracted data into structured formats that can be used within our clinical data platform (PostgreSQL).
- API Management: Work with third-party AI model providers (e.g., OpenAI, AWS, Google) to ensure smooth and efficient integration of LLMs and other AI tools.
- Prompt Engineering: Crafting and optimizing prompts for LLMs to ensure accurate and contextually relevant data extraction and transformation.
- Performance Optimization: Ensure that integrated models are optimized for performance, with a focus on accuracy, speed, and scalability to handle large datasets.
- Compliance & Security: Ensure that all AI integrations and data handling are compliant with healthcare regulations, such as HIPAA, while ensuring the security of sensitive patient data.
- Collaboration with Engineers: Work closely with Application Engineers to integrate AI-driven data extraction into the platform’s backend and ensure proper data flow.
- Monitoring & Troubleshooting: Set up monitoring systems to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the AI-powered extraction processes, and troubleshoot any issues that arise in production.
Experience:
- 3+ years of experience in AI/ML integration, with a focus on using pre-trained models (or fine-tuning LLMs) and APIs for NLP, LLMs, and data extraction and output techniques.
- Technical Expertise:
- Proficiency in Python (or JS) and experience working with APIs for AI/ML services (OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS SageMaker, Google Gemini, etc.).
- Experience with NLP and LLM integration for data extraction and transformation tasks.
- Familiarity with OCR technologies for converting unstructured text (e.g., PDFs) into structured data.
- Data Management: Knowledge of healthcare data standards (HL7, FHIR) and how to transform extracted data into usable formats for clinical data platforms.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of HIPAA compliance and best practices for handling sensitive healthcare data in AI pipelines.
- Collaboration Skills: Ability to work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth integration of AI tools into the platform.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical Informatics, or a related technical field required; Master’s or Ph.D. preferred — or equivalent experience.
Nice to Have:
- Experience with PostgreSQL and data management tools for efficient data storage and retrieval.
- Experience with FHIR APIs, healthcare data interoperability and integrating AI models with healthcare systems.
- Understanding of DevOps practices and tools (CI/CD, Kubernetes).
