Materials and Process Engineer, Impregnation
Castelion is seeking a highly motivated recent graduate or early-career engineer to support R&D development and scale-up of our ceramic matrix composite (CMC) prepreg and impregnation processes. This role will support production of the composite feedstock used to manufacture high-performance thermal protection system (TPS) components.
The position is ideal for a recent graduate interested in composite materials, slurry and resin processing, and scaling manufacturing processes for high-performance aerospace materials. The engineer will perform hands-on prepreg manufacturing while supporting process development, characterization, and production scale-up. Key processes include slurry preparation, fiber impregnation, solvent removal, prepreg handling, and continuous material processing.
The engineer will characterize raw materials and prepreg, own process data collection and analysis, and drive improvements in material consistency, process repeatability, and manufacturing readiness across the pilot line.
Responsibilities
- Support slurry preparation, fiber impregnation, and prepreg manufacturing operations.
- Develop and optimize impregnation parameters to control fiber content, resin/slurry loading, and material uniformity.
- Own process QA data collection, analysis, and database management.
- Characterize raw materials and prepreg to assess quality and guide process development.
- Develop and optimize slurry and impregnation processes to improve material consistency and process repeatability.
- Develop and maintain process documentation, work instructions, and standardized operating procedures.
- Support installation, maintenance, and scale-up of prepreg manufacturing hardware.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field.
- Familiarity with composite processing, polymer/slurry processing, and/or materials characterization techniques.
- Must be willing to work weekends when necessary.
- Ability to work independently in a hands-on engineering environment.
