Are you passionate about tackling climate challenges and driving sustainability solutions? As a Climate Action & Sustainability Specialist in the Climate Corps Fellowship program, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to impactful climate action & workforce development initiatives with the California Community College Chancellor's Office. 

This is a remote position. This fellowship will have occasional travel to different CA community colleges as well as the Chancellor's Office in Sacramento during the fellowship. This position requires the employee to be physically located in the state of California at the time of hire. Only candidates currently residing within CA will be considered.

Climate Action & Sustainability Specialist will work with the Chancellor's Office Climate Fellows Program, supporting multiple areas of sustainability. You’ll collaborate with the California Community College Chancellor's Office Finance & Facilities Division while gaining hands-on experience and making a tangible difference in the climate sector. This is an opportunity to support the largest higher education institution in the United States with respect to Climate Action and Sustainability and offers the ability to work on a large range of Sustainability topics from Community Engagement, Curriculum integration, workforce development, student engagement, and Facilities Operations (Buildings and Grounds).

Projects will include:

  • Climate Action - Community Engagement
    • Consider ways in which faculty and staff can support the climate change and sustainability goals of Vision 2030 through collaboration with community organizations.
    • Support colleges to create community engagement plans with local community-based organizations engaged in climate action.
    • Facilitate opportunities for colleges to engage in public-private partnerships with local employers.
    • Identify funding opportunities for colleges that will support campuses and communities to obtain additional resources for ongoing work.
  • Climate Action - Curriculum Intervention
    • Engage faculty to find discipline-specific examples of sustainability in their curriculum and support statewide dissemination of this information.
    • Support systemized collection and analysis of curriculum data.
    • Recommend ways to support faculty in efforts to advance climate action education and engagement.
    • Develop a statewide framework, partnering with the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) and the Chancellorʼs Office, on strategies to embed climate action and sustainability topics into the general curriculum.
    • Develop resource sharing and storage for climate across the curriculum.
  • Climate Action - Workforce Development
    • Develop a framework to assess the workforce needs of industries in the green and blue economy and to document the existing green and blue economy programs within the system.
    • Identify existing and develop new opportunities for living laboratories for students to engage in meaningful hands-on learning opportunities.
    • Identify funding opportunities to support the development of green and blue economy workforce development programs through grants for innovative initiatives.
  • Climate Action - Campus Facilities and Operations
    • Support statewide implementation framework for the Board of Governors Climate Action and Sustainability Goals and Vision 2030, including the creation and/or updating of administrative policies and plans to move toward the goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2035.
  • In partnership with the Chancellor’s Office Facilities Division, apply for grants and other funding opportunities to advance the goals of Vision 2030.

What You’ll Do

  • Continue to interview and update system-wide landscape analysis around Climate Action & Sustainability.
  • Support the Chancellor's Office Climate Fellows with various word products that will improve and support climate action and sustainability across the California Community College system.
  • Provide targeted Climate Action and Sustainability Support to groups of California Community Colleges to support baseline & metric development.

What We’re Looking For

  • Data Analytics experience.
  • Prior research and interviewing experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with case study writing.
  • A college degree is preferred but not required.
  • Coursework or related experience in environmental fields (e.g., internships, volunteer work) is preferred.
  • Must be a resident of California. 
  • Commitment to a fair workplace that honors the experiences, voices, viewpoints, and values of all individuals.
  • Authorization to work in the United States for the duration of the fellowship (SEI is unable to sponsor visas).
  • May require occasional moving about to accomplish tasks, moving from one worksite to another, or adjusting or moving objects under 25-50 pounds in all directions.
