Are you passionate about tackling climate challenges and driving sustainability solutions? As a Sustainability Reporting Fellow in the Climate Corps Fellowship program, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to impactful sustainability initiatives with College of Marin. This is an on-site position with the expectation of on-site work 5 days per week.

Under the direction of the Director of Facilities Planning, Maintenance & Operations, the Sustainability Reporting Specialist will collect, verify, and report data for the College of Marin AASHE Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) assessment. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop your professional skills, grow your network, and contribute to the College of Marin's sustainability goals.

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher EducationTM (AASHE®️) is widely recognized as the leading resource for faculty, administrators, staff, and students for its 900 member campuses across 48 U.S. states, 1 U.S. territory, 9 Canadian provinces, and 20 countries. AASHE’s Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™️ (STARS®️), developed by the higher education community through an inclusive process, provides a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance. An institution’s STARS score is based on the percentage of applicable points earned in credits across four main categories: Academics, Engagement, Operations, and Planning & Administration, with recognition for sustainability leadership at the reporter, bronze, silver, gold, and platinum levels. The report empowers campuses to establish a baseline for sustainability achievements, enables meaningful comparisons over time and across institutions using a common set of measurements, and facilitates planning for long-term sustainability goals through engagement of the entire campus community.

About Our Partner: College of Marin

College of Marin (COM) is committed to campus sustainability efforts and inspiring change in students, faculty, and staff. Through collective efforts and individual action, COM believes that they can all help to combat climate change and be better caretakers of our precious environmental and campus resources. The driven efforts of the college over the past decade make COM stand out as an exceptionally green organization, receiving a nomination for the Joe Garbarino Green Business Award in 2018. The College is also a recipient of multiple measures to renovate the Kentfield and Indian Valley Campuses with LEED-certified buildings. COM has installed solar arrays and is preparing to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to further reduce the environmental impact of the campus.

At COM, exceptional educational spaces designed to facilitate hands-on learning about sustainability meet a powerful commitment to educating students about the health of the earth and its resources. The goal of the college is for students to become active stewards of Marin and the North Bay. Through supportive educational facilities and engaging student development measures, the faculty of California community colleges and universities excel in providing exciting experiences in sustainability, from the classroom to the world at large, that students can take with them into the next steps of their lives.

What You’ll Do

  • Complete training on the use of the STARS reporting tool, goal-setting, project management, and best practices for submission of an AASHE STARS assessment.
  • Complete training to become a STARS Data Quality-certified professional.
  • Collaborate with the Fellowship Site Supervisor to identify and prioritize data collection for the STARS credits applicable to the College of Marin campus.
  • Identify campus data providers in collaboration with the Fellowship Site Supervisor.
  • Develop and execute a plan for quantitative and qualitative data collection using collaborative tools, including Google Sheets and Asana project management software.
  • Utilize the STARS technical manual to ensure that all data is accurate and complies with specific reporting requirements.

What We’re Looking For

  • Degree or commensurate experience in environmental studies, sustainability, or related fields.
  • Experience in sustainability tracking and initiatives.
  • Familiarity with sustainability terminology.
  • Excellent writing, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Google Spreadsheets.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently with diverse campus constituents.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with diverse, multi-stakeholder groups.
  • Excellent organizational skills. 
  • Technically adept and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to logically troubleshoot problems and develop creative solutions.
  • The ability to work onsite on a full-time basis. Only candidates currently residing within commuting distance of the site address will be considered.
  • Commitment to a fair workplace that honors the experiences, voices, viewpoints, and values of all individuals.
  • Authorization to work in the United States for the duration of the fellowship (SEI is unable to sponsor visas).
  • May require occasional moving about to accomplish tasks, moving from one worksite to another, or adjusting or moving objects under 25-50 pounds in all directions.
  • Must be 18 years or older to apply.

Nice-to-haves

  • Interest and skill in identifying effective data collection practices for a college campus.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, and a desire to build out new processes.

Climate Corps Fellowships are classified under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) as temporary, educational internships that emphasize training and career development, and thus no employment relationship exists, nor is compensation required. However, while not considered traditional employment, Fellows receive a living stipend and professional development support throughout the program.
