Role Summary: 

We are looking for a Director of Engineering to join our team and lead the development of our next-generation Platform — a unified foundation that powers all of Censys’ products. This platform will deliver a multi-client experience for enterprises and MSSPs, enabling seamless access across web, API, and future client interfaces. Your work will help create an ecosystem that integrates with key cybersecurity vendors, supports marketplaces and community collaboration portals, and scales to power the next decade of Internet intelligence.

Censys operates best-in-class Internet-wide scanning, bulk DNS resolution, and X.509 certificate ingestion. Your role will be to lead the teams responsible for not only the web application experiences and workflows, but also the platform services that underpin them such as Authentication, Entitlements, RBAC, Data Access, and Extensibility. AI will be at the heart of this vision, powering summaries, actionable intelligence, recommendations, and conversational workflows that make it easier than ever for customers to extract insights from our data.

We are looking for a hands-on leader who ensures the platform is architected for scalability and future extensibility, working closely with Product, UX, and Engineering to deliver innovative, high-quality solutions. You’ll help shape a platform that supports rapid development of future products, integrations, and AI-driven experiences for customers.

 

What you will do:

  • Lead teams that build and maintain Censys’ platform services (Authentication, Entitlements, RBAC, API, etc.) and web applications built on top of our Internet Map
  • Chart the path for AI integration across the platform, enabling conversational workflows, automated summaries, intelligent recommendations, and predictive insights
  • Drive the creation of a multi-client platform that supports enterprises, MSSPs, and ecosystem integrations with cybersecurity vendors and business applications
  • Lay the foundation for marketplaces, community portals, and collaboration platforms that will grow the Censys ecosystem
  • Partner with Product Management to deliver complete, high-quality solutions that align with business goals
  • Set and uphold a high bar for talent hiring and team development
  • Continually inspect processes and culture, identifying opportunities for improvement
  • Take responsibility for the full lifecycle of technical projects from research and design through development, delivery, and ongoing maintenance
  • Demonstrate a bias towards action, keeping teams iterative, customer-focused, and outcome-driven

What you will bring:

  • BS, preferably in Computer Science
  • 10+ years experience in software engineering, with leadership across multiple teams
  • Deep understanding of Internet infrastructure (DNS, IP WHOIS, routing, load balancing)
  • Proven success leading teams delivering SaaS applications on cloud infrastructure (GCP preferred)
  • Experience applying AI/ML techniques in both frontend (search, recommendations, workflows) and backend (model tuning, NLP, data-driven automation) contexts
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey both strategic and technical issues across cross-functional audiences
  • Track record of scaling team productivity through effective delegation and professional development
  • Strong grasp of the SDLC and holding teams accountable to deliver quality customer experiences

This job is not good fit if you:

  • Think management sits between engineering and the business
  • Think engineering’s job is done after the code is written
  • You think Product needs to have a long detailed PRD which can be handed over to engineering and worked on for an extended period
  • You aren’t willing to push your team harder to think about building systems that work at any scale

 

The salary range for this position is $224,000 - $275,000 + 15% annual bonus eligibility and equity, depending on geographic location data.
