Role overview
CarGurus is looking for a Frontend JavaScript Software Development Engineer Intern to join the Awareness team to support the build and operation of consumer-facing high-traffic web applications across CarGurus Homepage, Landing Pages, shared navigation, and discovery surfaces, as well as server-rendered React, SEO, experimentation, shared frontend infrastructure, and operational readiness. In this role, you will partner with product managers, designers, backend engineers, platform teams, and other frontend engineers to turn customer needs into production software, guide shoppers through the car-buying journey, and use feedback to continuously improve the experience
Focused on driving user engagement, you will build responsive, accessible frontend experiences that seamlessly guide top-of-funnel shoppers through their car-buying journey. You will strengthen core web applications by implementing scalable JavaScript and TypeScript patterns, reusable UI components, and modern delivery workflows that streamline the overall developer experience. Additionally, you will play an active role in improving application performance and reliability by writing robust automated tests, monitoring real-time observability metrics, and executing incremental modernization efforts based on team roadmaps.
As a Frontend JavaScript Software Development Engineer Intern, you will join an 11-week Summer Internship Program designed to give you hands-on experience, expand your professional network, and build core industry skills. This full-time opportunity (40 hours per week) runs from June through August 2027. CarGurus operates on a hybrid working model, and candidates should expect to work out of our Boston, MA office 60% of the time (approximately three days per week).
What you’ll do
- Build, test, review, deploy, and support production frontend features in JavaScript, TypeScript, and React, creating responsive, accessible, and maintainable experiences.
- Translate product and design requirements into thoughtful UI behavior across browser code, server-rendered routes, loaders, APIs, and shared frontend packages.
- Use experiments, analytics, testing, and performance techniques to improve customer experiences and ensure reliable behavior across devices and user states.
- Participate in technical design, code review, debugging, incident follow-up, and incremental refactoring while partnering with product, design, backend, and platform teams through production verification.
What you’ll bring
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field, with eligibility to complete a full-time internship.
- Passionate about learning to build and maintain real-world web applications.
- Solid foundation in JavaScript fundamentals with coursework or project experience in modern TypeScript.
- Hands-on experience building user interfaces using React or similar component-based frameworks through academic projects, bootcamps, or personal apps.
- Basic understanding of web fundamentals, including HTTP, asynchronous JavaScript, state management, and connecting to RESTful APIs.
- Exposure to writing basic automated tests and diagnosing failures in local and CI environments.
- Keen eye for responsive design, accessible UI elements, and overall user experience.
- Eager to tackle complex problems, break them into manageable steps, and ask clarifying questions to keep progress moving forward.
- Enthusiastic team player excited to collaborate with designers, backend developers, and senior engineers.
- Growth-oriented mindset with a strong desire to accept constructive feedback, learn quickly, and contribute positively to the team culture.
Nice to have
- Exposure to modern full-stack web development concepts through personal projects or coursework using frameworks like Remix, React Router, Node.js, GraphQL, or server-side rendering.
- Familiarity with basic web publishing concepts like SEO-sensitive pages, canonicalization, structured data, redirects, or content-managed experiences such as Builder.io or Contentful.
- Familiarity with experimentation systems, feature flags, analytics instrumentation, or Core Web Vitals.
- Interest in learning how to use logging, browser developer tools, and observability platforms to debug errors and monitor site performance.
The displayed range represents the expected hourly rate for this position.
The displayed range represents the expected annual base salary / On-Target Earnings (OTE) for this position. On-Target Earnings (OTE) is inclusive of base salary and on-target commission earnings, which applies exclusively to sales roles.
Individual pay within this range is determined by work location and other factors such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
This annual base salary forms part of a comprehensive Total Rewards Package. In addition to benefits, this role may qualify for discretionary bonuses/incentives and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
