
Director of Product Design
Change.org is searching for a Direct of Product Design. As a player-coach, you will lead a high-performing design team to enhance our current product by discovering, creating, and building innovative ways to engage our petition supporters. You will report to our VP of Design as a key leader of the Product team.

Key outcomes
- Understand our petition supporters and lead 0 to 1 strategic thinking about how best to engage them
- Discover and design new features to improve the user experience of our supporters
- Build a holistic UX vision and strategy for the supporter experience that is inspiring and impactful
- Coach and develop 2 designers, with a particular focus on design thinking skills
The most important core competencies for the role are:
- Design Thinking: You take a structured, human-centered approach to problem-solving that ensures products and experiences are intuitive, accessible, and valuable for users. You are skilled at deep user research, iterative prototyping, and cross-functional collaboration to create solutions that align with both user needs and business goals.
- User Empathy: You center users' emotions, motivations, and pain points in your design process and you leverage qualitative research to uncover these insights. You can anticipate and map users’ emotional states at different touchpoints. Your designs reduce stress and uncertainty and inspire trust and confidence.
- Holistic Design: You design for the entire user journey, considering how users interact with a product over time, across multiple touchpoints, and in different contexts. You ensure that an experience is cohesive, evolving, and continuously engaging. You think broadly about ecosystems, ensuring that early design decisions scale effectively. You consider how new solutions integrate with existing workflows and experiences.
- Collaboration & Influence: You successfully influence, even without direct authority, by building trust and credibility. You help build a culture of collaboration by proactively initiating larger, inclusive, cross-team, global conversations about key aspects of your work. You bring others along as you create your vision or execute your strategy, inspiring them to contribute and offer input, leading to systemic buy-in.
- Innovative Mindset: You are skilled at 0 to 1 design. You identify unmet user needs, envision new opportunities, and create new product experiences from the ground up. You’re able to build for both emotional and functional needs. You are comfortable with rapid prototyping and iterative learning, testing ideas before full execution, and prioritizing learning over perfection.
- Leadership & People Management: You inspire and motivate the people around you to deliver positive impacts for the business. You are courageously candid and comfortable giving and receiving feedback up, down and across an organization. You build and grow high-performing teams, maximizing their potential. Target experience
- 10+ years of product/UX design experience, ideally with a focus on B2C products
- 3+ years of experience managing product designers
- End-to-end UX expertise, including strategy, new feature development, UX, and UI.
- Strong qualitative and quantitative user research experience with significant experience moving from discovery to experimentation
- Experience building experiences that guide users through emotional journeys (healthcare, fintech, civic tech, etc.)

This is a full time, remote role based in North America.

Our compensation philosophy is based on pay equity. All of our salaries are determined before we launch a role – they are based on a predetermined salary scale, the level on that scale and the cost of labor for that location. The annual salary of a Director of Product Design is $265,000 in SF and NYC, $252,000 in Austin, Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Washington D.C., and $225,500 in all other US locations. In Toronto and Vancouver, the salary is $248,500 CAN. In Mexico, the salary is $1,939,000 MXN.
