As a Staff Software Engineer at Change.org, you’ll be part of a pool of exceptional developers considered for several key teams focused on growing the power of people everywhere. Whether you’re optimizing user flows to boost engagement or helping us scale our platform globally, your work will directly impact tens of millions of users and some of the most important social movements of our time.

Engineers may be matched to one of several high-impact teams, including:

  • Monetization – This squad focuses on driving sustainable revenue through our promoted petition and membership products. This team optimizes our high-volume funnels through rapid experimentation and learning.
  • Nonprofit Starters – This is a new squad that will build features to make our petition tool compelling to the world’s most influential petition starters, the majority of which are organizations and nonprofits.
  • Personalization – Build a best in class personalization and email program that delights users and helps them discover causes they care about.
  • Scaled Outreach – an AI-first team dedicated to building infrastructure that connects the powerful content generated on Change.org with journalists, media organizations, and influencers who can amplify these stories to broader audiences.
  • Signature Growth – This squad is dedicated to accelerating supporter growth, sharing, and K-factor.  Sharing is the primary way petitions grow and become powerful.

Change.org is a social impact business (a public benefit company), and the world's largest social change platform, with 100 million monthly users, over 40,000 campaigns launched on the site every month, and a 100% user-generated, profitable revenue model. Our users win campaigns for change once every hour. In the last decade in Mexico, from the mobilization against the Maya train to the campaign to increase vacation days, many nationwide movements were created on Change.org. From the campaign Cáncer Warriors to ask for the release of the elephant Eli, dozens of local, national and international victories are happening every day thanks to the power of our users who are changing our country.

  • Collaborated effectively with stakeholders from other departments or teams, representing the engineering team's interests, and influencing decision-making processes to align with project goals and organizational objectives.
  • Identified opportunities to improve development processes and workflows, implementing changes that streamline project achievement, enhance team productivity, and ensure adherence to best practices. 
  •  This job is expected to participate in our on call rotation.

Core competencies:

Technical Skills:

  • Deep full-stack expertise with a track record of building and scaling high-performance, resilient systems across both frontend and backend.
  • Thought leader in modern frontend technologies (e.g., React, JavaScript, TypeScript), driving excellence in user experience across the engineering org.
  • Advanced proficiency in backend development with Node.js and TypeScript, including complex system design, data modeling, and performance optimization.
  • Extensive experience designing and integrating RESTful APIs and GraphQL services in high-traffic applications.
    Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP) and CI/CD best practices, with the ability to guide platform-level decisions.

Planning & Execution:

  • Owns the technical direction for large, ambiguous initiatives—breaking down complexity into executable plans that align with company goals.
  • Anticipates system limitations, proactively addresses gaps, and aligns engineering efforts with product and business strategy.
  • Balances long-term technical health with short-term impact, setting a high bar for velocity, quality, and scalability.
  • Navigates and unblocks complex technical challenges, identifying cross-team dependencies and aligning stakeholders around solutions.

Architecture & Design, Performance:

  • Sets standards for system architecture and software quality, ensuring that solutions are scalable, maintainable, and built to last.
  • Leads the design and evolution of critical systems, applying deep knowledge of performance engineering, instrumentation, and observability.
  • Mentors engineers across the organization in technical design, guiding teams through tradeoffs and long-term thinking.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Operates as a key technical partner to Product, Design, Analytics, and other stakeholders, aligning technical strategy with broader organizational goals.
  • Communicates technical decisions and trade-offs with clarity and empathy, adapting to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Advocates for engineering excellence and operational best practices in areas such as security, performance, testing, and accessibility.
  • Champions a collaborative and inclusive engineering culture, fostering psychological safety, mentorship, and continuous learning across teams.

Target Experience:

  • 5-8+ years of software engineering experience, preferably in a growth or engagement-focused role.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with React, TypeScript, and GraphQL in production environments.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in Node.js.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code technologies, including Terraform, Kubernetes, and AWS, to ensure scalable and secure system architecture.
  • English fluency (Minimum B2).

This is a full-time remote role available in two different formats: 

  • Full-Time Employee: MX$140,292/month gross via a local third-party entity.
  • Contractor: MX$182,438/month gross.

Our compensation philosophy is based on pay equity. All of our salaries are determined before we launch a role – they are based on a predetermined salary scale, the level on that scale and the cost of labor for that location. 

Our Hiring Process:

  1. 45 min Recruiter Screen
  2. 1 hr Hiring Manager interview
  3. 3 h Tech interviews which includes a live coding session, architecture interview, and product interview
  4. ½ hr Interview with our VP of Engineering and ½ hr values interview with some People team members
