Scientist - Genomics Platform (Biohub SF)
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) (https://www.czbiohub.org/sf/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.
Our Vision
- We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
- We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
- The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond
Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.
The Opportunity
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub is looking for a curious, energetic and talented Scientist to join the Genomics Platform. Our mission is to continuously evaluate and integrate cutting-edge methodologies to enable utilization of high-quality genomic measurements in all areas of biomedical research. We collaborate with researchers across the different platforms at CZ Biohub and our partnering universities, bringing state of the art technologies to high-throughput sample preparation, NGS and long-read sequencing, droplet and plate-based scRNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics and multiomics pipelines. We are actively involved in various projects including data generation for single-cell atlases of model and non-model organisms, optimization of short and long-read sequencing pipelines resulting in cutting-edge analysis of gene regulation and organismal development, and direct mapping of single cell identities using novel spatial transcriptomics technologies such MERFISH and SlideSeq.
We are looking for a candidate interested in pursuing projects that leverage single-cell transcriptomics, spatial transcriptomics, short and long read sequencing expertise, and high-throughput sequencing assay development to advance the understanding of human biology. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical skills, have a passion for novel work, and have excellent communication skills.
You will
- Lead long-read sequencing efforts using PacBio and Oxford Nanopore technologies. May include single-cell RNA seq and human whole-genome sequencing
- Improve and standardize existing protocols and SOPs, maintain careful records, and develop new techniques/ protocols based on the latest scientific and technological advancements
- Perform data analysis, and interpret and present your findings in lab meetings, internal seminars and conferences
- Educate and advise internal and external collaborators on the best sequencing technologies and methodologies during the development of new projects
- Initiate and lead research projects, and design and perform experiments that will advance CZ Biohub’s top line goals, while keeping project goals and timelines on track
- Work well and communicate clearly across an interdisciplinary team of Scientists, Computational Biologists, IT, Data and Software Engineers, Field Service Engineers and Field Application Scientists to optimize workflows
- Partner, mentor and train junior scientists with different levels of expertise on high throughput molecular biology techniques using various liquid handling robotics
You have
Essential –
- PhD (or MS +6-8 years of research experience) in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biotechnology or related field
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with molecular, cell biology and/or synthetic biology techniques
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working with short and long read sequencing technologies, and evaluating novel technologies
- Minimum of 3 years of experience running Illumina sequencers, including hands-on experience with library prep protocols and data processing
- Experience leading scientific research projects, and mentoring junior researchers
- Detail oriented, including the ability to understand a system of complex interactions and summarize the concepts to technical and non-technical collaborators
- Experience with data analysis and visualization in Python (preferred) or R
- Ability to adopt and adapt cutting edge single-cell omics approaches for answering fundamental science research questions
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network requires all employees, regardless of work location or type of role, to provide proof of their initial COVID-19 vaccination by their start date. Those who are unable to get vaccinated because of a disability, or who choose not to be vaccinated due to a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance must have an approved exception prior to their start date.
Compensation
- Scientist I = $100,000 - $137,500
- Scientist II = $112,000 - $154,000
New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. To determine starting pay, we consider multiple job-related factors including a candidate’s skills, education and experience, market demand, business needs, and internal parity. We may also adjust this range in the future based on market data. Your recruiter can share more about the specific pay range during the hiring process.
