Research Associate - Arias Group
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) (https://www.czbiohub.org/sf/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.
Our Vision
- We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
- We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
- The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond
Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.
The Opportunity
The Arias Group at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub is seeking a curious, energetic, and talented Research Associate to join our team. Our research focuses on understanding the dynamic changes human cells undergo during viral infection. By identifying cellular factors essential for viral replication but nonessential for normal cell function, we aim to uncover novel targets for antiviral therapies.
As a Research Associate, you will have the unique opportunity to learn and apply cutting-edge techniques in cell engineering and imaging. You will work closely with senior researchers to create and distribute engineered cell lines to collaborators across the country, gaining insights into diverse scientific projects and cutting-edge science. This role offers a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment, ideal for someone passionate about advancing science. This is a 1 year contract with benefits.
You will
- Under the mentorship and supervision of senior researchers, plan and carry out experiments designed to engineer optical reporters in mammalian cells
- Maintain a library of cell lines as needed for various studies
- Distribute the library of cells to collaborators across the country
- Learn and utilize cutting edge techniques involving microscopy and flow cytometry
- Work with personnel from different research platforms (proteomics, genomics, imaging, cell biology, data science)
- Troubleshoot protocols, maintain detailed records, analyze results, and contribute ideas to research projects
You have
Essential –
- Bachelor's degree in a life science or associated field with relevant coursework including molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry
- Minimum of 1 year of experience with wet laboratory techniques (DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, cloning/construct design)
- Hands on tissue culture experience
- Experience in data collection, analysis, and interpretation
- High attention to detail and very strong organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to document experiments and/or keep clear inventory records
- Ability to multi-task and work both independently and collaboratively across platforms
Nice to have -
- 3 years experience in molecular lab techniques (qPCR, protein purification, tissue culture, cytometry, microscopy)
- Previous research, job or internship experience in an academic or industry setting involving one year of tissue culture experience
