Research Associate - Cell Biology (Leonetti Group)
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) (https://www.czbiohub.org/sf/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.
Our Vision
- We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
- We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
- The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond
Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.
The Opportunity
Come develop multidisciplinary skills in a collegial non-profit environment that brings together biologists, engineers and data scientists!
The Intracellular Architecture Group at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub (led by Manu Leonetti; https://www.czbiohub.org/leonetti) strives to map how human cells are built. For this we combine CRISPR, molecular biology, fluorescence microscopy, proteomics, robotics, software engineering and data science. We build large datasets and use them to draw new biological insights. For example, our flagship OpenCell project provides a large reference of protein localization and interactions that can be mined and re-used by the entire community for discovery (https://opencell.czbiohub.org/). Our science is fully open-source and published in journals like Science and Nature Methods (https://bit.ly/3T5Fbmf; https://go.nature.com/3rXOSae).
We are seeking a Research Associate - Cell Biology to help build and characterize cell-based disease models. You will engineer and maintain cell lines, and analyze genomic and transcriptomic signatures using deep sequencing. You will assist with functional characterization of cellular states using microscopy and proteomics methods.
This is a great opportunity for candidates with a strong interest in cell biology and biotechnology, supported by experts in a highly collaborative and well-funded scientific environment. Recent graduates interested in research experience before applying to graduate or medical school are welcome to apply.
You will
- Maintain human cell lines, including stem cells (iPSCs)
- Differentiate iPSCs into different cell types
- Manipulate cellular function using CRISPR genome engineering (knock-out & knock-in)
- Design and characterize reporter constructs (ex: fluorescent reporters of cellular pathways)
- Analyze genotypes and transcriptomes using next-generation sequencing
- Assist with live-cell microscopy and mass-spectrometry experiments
- Perform data analysis under supervision, including Python
- Author publications
You have
Essential –
- B.Sc. in Cell Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry or a related discipline
- At least 1 year of experience with tissue culture in a research laboratory setting
- At least 1 years of experience in molecular biology (cloning, PCR)
- Passion for research and understanding how cells work
- Enthusiasm for collaboration and open science
- Must be team-oriented, and have excellent written and oral communication skills
Nice to have -
- Experience with iPSC and differentiated cells
- Experience with CRISPR methods
- Experience with live-cell microscopy
- Experience with coding (Python, R, etc.)
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network requires all employees, regardless of work location or type of role, to provide proof of their initial COVID-19 vaccination by their start date. Those who are unable to get vaccinated because of a disability, or who choose not to be vaccinated due to a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance must have an approved exception prior to their start date.
Compensation
- Research Associate I = $52,000 - $77,000
- Research Associate II = $67,000 - $99,000
New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. To determine starting pay, we consider multiple job-related factors including a candidate’s skills, education and experience, market demand, business needs, and internal parity. We may also adjust this range in the future based on market data. Your recruiter can share more about the specific pay range during the hiring process.
What We Provide
