The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network (https://www.czbiohub.org/) is a group of nonprofit research institutes that bring together scientists, engineers, and physicians with the goal of pursuing grand scientific challenges on 10- to 15-year time horizons. The CZ Biohub Network focuses on understanding underlying mechanisms of disease and developing new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies.

The Opportunity

As a People Business Partner, you will collaborate with the Director, People Business Partnerships, Science Lead, and organizational leaders at CZ Biohub Chicago. Your role will be pivotal in executing our strategy for hiring, developing, and engaging our teams to achieve our mission. We seek an experienced HR Business Partner with experience supporting diverse teams in dynamic organizations. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in partnering with leaders to motivate, lead, and engage employees, aligning with our core values and mission. Success in this role requires thriving in a fast-paced, evolving environment, taking initiative, and a passion for executing big ideas while empowering individuals.

What You'll Do

  • Establish and cultivate strong partnerships with leaders and employees to provide guidance and support on HR matters, including employee relations, conflict resolution, performance management, compensation, and issue resolution.
  • Offer strategic direction on organizational design to ensure CZ Biohub Chicago develops a robust and sustainable people infrastructure.
  • Mentor and coach employees at all levels, actively listen, and foster positive relationships across a diverse workforce.
  • Identify and contribute to the development of the People team programs and processes.
  • Utilize excellent written and verbal communication skills, leadership, and integrity to influence and guide teams.
  • Leverage people-related data to inform strategic decision-making and develop effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with functional experts across the People team (Compensation, Learning & Development, People Operations, Organization Engagement, and Recruiting) to develop and implement programs that support talent development, retention, and identification.
  • Provide HR support to employees and senior leaders, ensuring the development, implementation, and reinforcement of effective HR policies and practices aligned with business units and CZI's overall goals.
  • Execute and enhance company-wide People programs and projects, focusing on building a strong science culture and strengthening team engagement (e.g., career pathways and engagement surveys).
  • Maintain and advise on performance management processes, including evaluations, accelerated development, succession planning, coaching, performance reviews, and terminations. Partner with senior management and recruiting to develop hiring and headcount plans that support business objectives and growth.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and Illinois state laws, as well as internal policies and procedures.

What You'll Bring 

Essential –

  • Bachelors degree or comparable experience
  • 5-8 years of experience as an HR Business Partner in a rapidly scaling organization; experience in Life Sciences is preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Human Resources legislation/employment law, principles, policies, and procedures.
  • Proven experience in resolving employee relations issues and cross-functional collaboration.
  • A strong passion for accelerating social progress and working collaboratively with a diverse team of scientists, academics, community activists, and technologists.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence through effective listening, writing, and presenting. Demonstrated ability to coach employees and managers in sensitive situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, fostering trust and confidence with HR colleagues and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to align people and organizational practices with strategic goals and objectives.

Compensation 

The Chicago, IL base pay range for this role is $130,000.00 - $178,000.00. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process.
