Research Scholar, Advanced Single Cell Technologies Platform (Biohub NY)

New York, New York, United States

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub New York (CZ Biohub NY) (https://www.czbiohub.org/ny/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Columbia University, The Rockefeller University, and Yale University - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub NY itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.

Our Vision

  • We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
  • We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
  • The technologies developed at CZ Biohub facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond

Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.

The Opportunity

The Advanced Single Cell Technologies platform provides critical single cell profiling and perturbation assays, technology, and expertise to the CZ Biohub NY community. The goal of this platform is to use and develop cutting-edge single-cell technologies in collaborations related to studying human disease and the interaction of immune cells with human organs, which are foundational goals of the CZ Biohub NY. Our research focuses on scaling single-cell technology performance and incorporating diverse analytical dimensions (-omics) into unified single-cell platforms. The Research Scholar should demonstrate strong familiarity with state-of-the-art single-cell methods and comprehend the full experimental and analytical pathway from cell isolation to data interpretation. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of designing and executing experiments, troubleshooting technical issues, and driving research projects to completion through independent problem-solving and project leadership.

The Research Scholar will go beyond implementing existing single-cell technologies to actively drive field innovation through method enhancement and novel technique development. We seek candidates who are passionate about understanding each step of the process and thrive when adapting methodologies to address new research challenges.

What You'll Do

  • Design and perform molecular biology assays including primer design, DNA/RNA purification, gel electrophoresis, PCR, etc.
  • Design, benchmark and optimize single cell/nuclei extraction, barcoding, and library preparation methods
  • Perform next generation sequencing and troubleshoot novel applications
  • Independently identify and recommend improvements to experimental processes and best practices
  • Analyze single-cell sequencing data
  • Create analytical pipelines for emerging single-cell technologies
  • Lead development of single cell multi-omics profiling technologies for high throughput screening
  • Collaborate with other scientists to design experimental approaches and lead problem-solving initiatives
  • Prepare and present scientific manuscripts and presentations

What You'll Bring

Essential –

  • PhD degree in bioengineering, biology, systems biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field
  • At least one year of programming experience in Python and/or R
  • Experience developing genomic technologies through all phases from initial concept to final implementation and troubleshooting, including single-cell analysis, novel methods for genomic library construction and instrumentation
  • Expertise in bioinformatics including computational pipelines for analyzing bulk and single-cell genomic data (BWA, STAR, kallisto, scanpy, Seurat, etc.)
  • Next generation sequencing knowledge, and hands-on experience sequencing libraries
  • Specific experience developing platform technologies for single-cell genomics and working with laboratory automation
  • A strong sense of curiosity and drive to explore
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and work in a team.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Ability to collaborate in a diverse environment

Nice to have –

  • Experience with single-cell multiomic assays
  • Experience with hydrogel preparation, characterization and application
  • Experience with high-performance computing environments and Linux systems
