174 Power Global has recently embarked to enter the energy retail market in deregulated markets throughout North America. Chariot Energy is a retail energy provider based in Houston, Texas. 174 Power Global has set out to have Chariot Energy become one of the leading energy retail providers (by RCE count) within 5-years of Chariot Energy’s launch.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a Sr Energy Trader who is independent, results-oriented, self-motivated and wants to be part of a dynamic organization. The ideal candidate will have experience in the deregulated retail electricity space with a strong focus on Retail Supply Trading responsible for managing the trading of electricity, focusing on power market congestion and transmission constraints. This role requires a deep understanding of energy markets, transmission systems, and the ability to make real-time trading decisions to optimize the flow of electricity. The Sr Energy Trader will work closely with other departments, including risk management, operations, energy analytics and finance, to monitor and capitalize on market opportunities, mitigate risks, and maximize profit from power congestion.

This position is in Houston, and the ideal candidate will be within commutable distance to the Houston office location. The position will be located out of the Chariot Energy Houston office.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • As part of the wholesale desk enabling the growth of Chariot/174PG’s business, this role will be responsible for all retail supply management activities in ERCOT power market.
  • The activities include bilateral purchases and sales, ISO bidding and scheduling, congestion management and asset optimization across Chariot/174PG’s load and generation assets.
  • Responsible for managing the shape/swing risk of the retail load portfolio and optimizing the embedded optionality of residential solar and storage assets.
  • Maintain all the relevant wholesale and retail price curves including implied hourly scalers and scarcity premiums.
  • Expand supplier and broker relationships to maximize the market coverage and trading liquidity.
  • Ensure compliance of all approved risk limits with close monitoring of position and mark-to-market reports
  • Help explain supply related drivers impacting forward and settled retail gross margins.
  • Serves as the company's primary interface to the ERCOT power market to provide expert market information and track market/regulatory changes.
  • Work closely with technology team to develop and maintain all the analytical and operational tools required for effective trading and decision making.
  • Monitor and analyze transmission congestion patterns and identify trading opportunities in congested areas.
  • Utilize forecasting models, market data, and real-time information to predict congestion and its impact on electricity prices.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of market conditions, regulatory changes, and system dynamics to assess the impact of congestion on power markets.
  • Develop and implement trading strategies to take advantage of price discrepancies due to congestion.
  • Execute trades in day-ahead and real-time markets to capitalize on congestion opportunities and mitigate associated risks.
  • Manage and monitor trading positions across various market segments, including day-ahead, real-time, and forward markets.
  • Collaborate with other traders, analysts, and operational teams to share insights and refine trading strategies.
  • Provide timely reports on trading activities, market conditions, and profit/loss analysis.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7+ years of related trading work experience in Energy industry, specifically ERCOT & PJM.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, Economics, Engineering, or a related field. An advanced degree (e.g., MBA, Master’s in Energy Economics) is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of power markets, electricity pricing, and the factors influencing congestion.
  • Familiarity with transmission system operations, power flow modeling, and grid reliability standards is preferred.
  • Expertise in power market dynamics, including day-ahead, real-time, and forward markets.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to process and interpret complex market data.
  • Proficiency in trading platforms and financial modeling tools used by energy markets (e.g., Dayzer)
  • Understanding of market regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with ETRM systems.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of power fundamentals and market rules/structure
  • Strong aptitude for problem solving and multitasking.
  • Self-motivated and ability to work in a collaborative environment where teamwork and independent work ethic is essential.
  • Deadline-oriented with an ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent decision-making skills in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite Apps: Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency with programming languages (e.g., Python, SQL) for data analysis and modeling is a plus.
  • Eligible to work in the USA for any employer without sponsorship.
