About the Role
Title: Payroll Manager
Reports to: VP of People
Location: Remote
CharterUP is seeking a full-time Payroll Manager to lead and execute our payroll operations from end to end. This role is critical to ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency for our rapidly growing team of 300+ employees and contractors. The Payroll Manager will oversee multi-state payroll processing, regulatory compliance, and continuous system optimization to support our dynamic and distributed workforce.
What You’ll Do
- Process and Manage Payroll: Handle end-to-end payroll processing for our team, including weekly, bi-weekly, and semi-monthly pay runs for W2 employees, 1099 contractors, and international workers.
- Ensure Compliance: Oversee state and local registration processes to ensure compliance with all payroll regulations, including SUI and SUT accounts.
- Maintain Regulatory Relationships: Monitor and respond to inquiries from state, county, and city regulatory agencies to maintain compliance and address any issues promptly.
- Optimize Systems: Review and refine the configuration of Rippling, our payroll system, to ensure it meets both legal requirements and company needs.
- Support Business Growth: Proactively identify opportunities for process improvements and scalability as our workforce expands.
What You Bring
- Payroll Expertise: In-depth knowledge of US payroll operations, including state-specific compliance regulations.
- Multi-State Experience: Proven track record of managing payroll for distributed teams with both exempt and non-exempt employees.
- Attention to Detail: Highly organized, with exceptional accuracy and a strong sense of ownership over payroll processes and outcomes.
- System Proficiency: Familiarity with Rippling payroll management is a significant plus.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of payroll management experience in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

Compensation:
$100,000 - $120,000 USD
