About the team/role
We're seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our Candidates team. This team plays a crucial role in our mission by developing and maintaining the systems that manage the candidate application flow and related processes.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Candidates team, you'll work on high-impact projects that directly contribute to the core functionality of Checkr's background check services. You'll be instrumental in improving our candidate application systems, enhancing data processing capabilities, and ensuring a smooth and efficient experience for candidates going through the background check process.
What you’ll do:
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable and efficient systems for the candidate application flow
- Optimize application processes to improve speed and user experience for candidates
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement and improve candidate-facing functionalities
- Ensure data integrity and compliance with legal and privacy requirements
- Participate in architecture discussions and contribute to technical decision-making
- Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices within the team
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues in production environments
- Work closely with product managers and other stakeholders to define and implement new features
What you bring:
- 5+ years of full-stack software development experience
- Strong proficiency in at least one of Ruby (preferred), Python, or Golang
- Proficiency in React, Angular, or similar frontend technologies
- Experience with large-scale data processing and user flow optimization
- Solid understanding of database systems, both SQL and NoSQL
- Familiarity with cloud technologies (preferably AWS)
- Knowledge of security best practices and data privacy concerns
- Experience with microservices architecture and RESTful APIs
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment

At Checkr, we believe a hybrid work environment strengthens collaboration, drives innovation, and encourages connection. Our hub locations are Denver, CO, San Francisco, CA, and Santiago, Chile. Individuals are expected to work from the office 2 to 3 days a week. In-office perks are provided, such as lunch four times a week, a commuter stipend, and an abundance of snacks and beverages.

We use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop ranges for our roles and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range. If this role is remote, we have listed the top to the bottom of the possible range, but we will specify the target range for an exact location when you are selected for a recruiting discussion. The base salary range for this role is $175,662 to $206,661 in San Francisco, California.
