About the role
The Verifications team is responsible for one of Checkr's most expansive product portfolios, an ever growing suite of screening products empowering informed decisions across our enterprise customers. Employment and education verifications, drug and occupational health screenings, reference checks, and right-to-work – are several of the products this team improves to drive growth and customer retention. Our customers place candidates into widely different roles, industries, and regulatory environments, each with distinct compliance and screening requirements, necessitating rapid product iteration across multiple fronts concurrently.
As Engineering Manager for Verifications, you'll own a wide surface area with meaningful room to make it better — improving accuracy and turnaround time, reducing manual touchpoints, and scaling how the team delivers across a complex mix of fulfillment integrations and compliance requirements. This role requires a focus on both immediate system scalability and long-term delivery process refinement. This includes near-term work on scaling data quality and automation systems to handle rapid growth, alongside strategic, longer-horizon investments in expanding coverage and building a faster, more consistent verification experience for our rapidly scaling candidate and customer base.
What you’ll do
- Lead and grow the Verifications engineering team — setting technical direction, driving performance and career development conversations, and building a hiring pipeline that strengthens the team over time
- Own the reliability and quality of a broad portfolio of fulfillment integrations — partnering closely with vendors and internal stakeholders to reduce friction, improve turnaround times, and minimize candidate and customer impact when issues arise
- Partner with Product to define and execute the roadmap across employment, education, drug and health, and compliance products — translating customer and regulatory requirements into clear engineering priorities
- Drive technical strategy for scaling a complex, integration-heavy system — making deliberate architecture decisions that improve coverage, reduce manual exceptions, and build toward a more automated and consistent verification experience
- Lead the team's adoption of AI-assisted development practices — helping engineers move faster while maintaining the quality and accuracy standards that a regulated, data-sensitive product requires
- Represent Verifications in cross-functional planning — serving as the engineering voice on team capacity, tradeoffs, and roadmap sequencing with Product, Compliance, and Engineering leadership
What you bring
- 4+ years as an engineering manager, with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams
- 8+ years as a software engineer, with strong command of service architecture, distributed systems, and system design
- Experience managing complex third-party integration environments — you’re comfortable owning reliability across systems you don’t fully control, and know how to structure teams and processes around that reality
- A track record of improving operational metrics — reducing incident frequency, improving detection time, or shipping reliability improvements in high-stakes production environments
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development and agentic coding tools — you understand how to help your team adopt these responsibly and can reason about the tradeoffs between velocity and quality they introduce
- Experience working on regulated products where data accuracy and legal compliance are non-negotiable
- Strong incident management skills — you can lead both the technical response and the stakeholder communication when things go wrong
- Ability to make prioritization decisions quickly, with a clear framework for balancing short-term reliability work against longer-term product investments
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders — Product, Operations, Compliance, and senior leadership
- A genuine investment in developing people — through career conversations, stretch assignments, and creating conditions for engineers to grow
- Humility, openness to feedback, and eagerness to learn
- An A-player mindset with a strong bias for action: you raise the bar, move with urgency, stay resilient through ambiguity, and take ownership to deliver meaningful outcomes
What you’ll get
- A fast-paced and collaborative environment
- Learning and development allowance
- Competitive compensation and opportunity for advancement
- 100% medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Up to $25K reimbursement for fertility, adoption, and parental planning services
- Flexible PTO policy
- Monthly wellness stipend, home office stipend
