Job Description
ChenMoore is seeking a Senior Engineer, Distribution to support the design and delivery of power distribution infrastructure projects across Florida and surrounding states. This role will focus on utility distribution systems, including overhead and underground design, system upgrades, and grid resiliency initiatives.
The ideal candidate brings experience in electric utility distribution design, strong engineering fundamentals, and the ability to support projects from field data collection through final design and construction packages.
Responsibilities
- Support the design and engineering of electric utility distribution systems (overhead and underground).
- Perform engineering calculations and design for:
- Conductor sizing and reconductoring
- Pole loading and structural analysis
- Transformer and equipment placement
- Conduct field visits and site assessments, including data collection, measurements, and existing condition evaluations.
- Develop construction-ready design packages, including plans, specifications, and material estimates.
- Apply utility standards and client specifications.
- Evaluate system performance and develop solutions for:
- Capacity upgrades
- Clearance violations
- Aging infrastructure replacement
- Support storm hardening and grid resiliency projects.
- Coordinate with internal engineering teams, clients, and external stakeholders.
- Assist with project scheduling, budgeting, and deliverable tracking.
- Mentor junior engineers and support technical development of the team.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or closely related field.
- 10+ years of experience in power delivery or electric utility distribution design.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Florida (or ability to obtain within 6–12 months).
- Experience with overhead and/or underground distribution systems.
- Knowledge of utility standards and design practices.
- Strong understanding of NEC, NESC, and applicable industry standards.
- Experience with engineering/design tools such as:
- AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar
- Distribution design platforms (preferred)
- Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting projects in the 4kV – 35kV distribution range.
- Familiarity with utility clients in Florida (FPL, Duke Energy, cooperatives, municipalities).
- Experience with pole loading analysis tools and distribution modeling software.
- Experience with storm hardening or infrastructure resilience programs.
