Senior Network Operations Engineer
About Cipher Mining
We are an industrial-scale data center construction and operations company. We allocate data center opportunities between bitcoin mining and other high performance computing services, such as AI. We continue to develop our pipeline of power capacity at high quality data center sites, either for bitcoin mining or HPC. Our best-in-class management team leverages expertise from the technology, fintech, energy, and finance domains, as well as deep experience related to cryptocurrencies and blockchain.
Role Overview
We are seeking a technically driven and operationally minded Senior Network Operations Engineer to take ownership of how our network is monitored, managed, and defended against disruption. This is a lead-level role centered on building and maintaining the procedures, processes, and escalation frameworks that keep our network operations running smoothly — and ensure our teams respond decisively when they don't.
You will be the primary architect of our NOC operational playbook, a senior escalation authority during critical incidents, and a hands-on technical leader who raises the bar for the entire operations team.
Key Responsibilities
Operations Leadership
- Own the development, documentation, and continuous improvement of network operations procedures, runbooks, and SOPs
- Define and maintain escalation frameworks, ensuring clear ownership and response paths for incidents of all severity levels
- Lead post-incident reviews and drive root cause analysis (RCA) to closure, translating findings into actionable process improvements
- Establish and enforce operational standards across the NOC, including change management, monitoring coverage, and incident handling practices
- Act as the primary point of escalation for complex, high-impact network events — providing expert guidance and decisive leadership under pressure
Network Engineering & Administration
- Monitor, maintain, and optimize a large-scale telecommunications network including routing, switching, and transport infrastructure
- Design and implement network changes, upgrades, and capacity expansions with minimal service disruption
- Configure and manage network devices including routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers
- Evaluate and recommend tools, technologies, and automation strategies to improve network reliability and operational efficiency
Team Development
- Mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers, building technical depth and operational discipline across the team
- Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, security, and leadership teams to align operations practices with broader organizational goals
- Manage and coordinate with third-party vendors and service providers during service interruptions, serving as the primary technical liaison to drive timely resolution, enforce SLA accountability, and ensure clear communication throughout the incident lifecycle
- Serve as a subject matter expert and internal resource for network operations best practices
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in network operations or network engineering, with at least 2 years in a lead or senior escalation role — preferably in a telecommunications environment
- Demonstrated experience building or overhauling NOC procedures, escalation workflows, and incident management processes
- Deep expertise in routing protocols: BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS
- Strong hands-on experience with platforms such as Cisco IOS/IOS-XR, Juniper Junos, or Nokia SR OS
- Proficiency with network monitoring and management tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Nagios, Zabbix, PRTG, or similar)
- Experience with packet analysis tools such as Wireshark
- Solid understanding of WAN technologies: MPLS, SD-WAN, DWDM, Ethernet
- Experience with network automation using Python, Ansible, or similar tools
- Proven ability to lead incident response efforts and communicate clearly with both technical teams and stakeholders during high-pressure situations
Preferred Qualifications
- Active CCNP, CCIE, or JNCIE certification
- Experience implementing or working within ITIL frameworks; familiarity with ticketing systems such as ServiceNow or Remedy
- Experience with SDN/NFV technologies
- Familiarity with cloud networking (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Knowledge of VoIP/SIP or other telco-specific protocols
