Transportation Design Project Manager

Salt Lake City, Utah, United States

Civil Science is seeking an experienced Transportation Design Project Manager to support and grow our Utah transportation practice. This is a high-impact leadership role focused on project delivery, client relationship management, business development, and—importantly—mentoring and developing the next generation of engineers and project leaders.

In this role, you will lead transportation design projects for UDOT and local municipalities, guiding work from pursuit through delivery while helping expand our presence across northern Utah. You will collaborate with internal teams and external partners to deliver high-quality infrastructure solutions, while also playing a hands-on role in coaching, mentoring, and growing team members into future leaders.

This is a strategic hire tied directly to our long-term growth plan. You will step into active project opportunities, help stabilize and lead delivery, and contribute to expanding our footprint in the region. Just as importantly, you will help shape the future of the team—building capability, strengthening leadership, and investing in the development of those around you.

Civil Science is 100% employee-owned, meaning every team member has a stake in our success. Our ownership culture promotes accountability, collaboration, and pride in delivering meaningful infrastructure for the communities we serve, while creating opportunities for individuals to grow, lead, and make a lasting impact.

What You’ll Get to Do:

  • Lead and manage transportation design projects for UDOT and municipal clients
  • Oversee scope, schedule, and budget across multiple concurrent projects
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams and provide technical oversight
  • Support and mentor junior engineers and project managers
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships with public-sector partners
  • Actively participate in business development, proposals, and project pursuits
  • Collaborate with leadership on strategic growth initiatives in Utah
  • Ensure quality control and adherence to agency standards and requirements
  • Track project performance and make adjustments to maintain success
  • Contribute to long-term planning and market expansion efforts

What Qualifications You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; Utah licensure required or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire
  • Minimum 12+ years of transportation design experience
  • Experience delivering DOT and/or municipal transportation projects
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Strong understanding of roadway, drainage, utility, or traffic design
  • Experience leading teams and mentoring junior staff
  • Strong communication and client management skills

What Will Help You Stand Out:

  • UDOT project experience or strong familiarity with Utah agencies
  • Experience with ProjectWise, Bluebeam, or similar tools
  • Background in roadway, drainage, or traffic design
  • Experience with proposal development and business development
  • Previous experience mentoring or supervising staff
