Role
As a DevOps engineer on the Infrastructure Team, you will have the opportunity and challenge of being involved in all portions of our product offerings. Our core responsibilities are building, maintaining and supporting the infrastructure which drives the product platform. While our core responsibilities remain the same, we adjust quite frequently in support of other teams. One sprint you may be deploying an API gateway for a new serverless API, the next you may be asked to review, design and implement a scalable data retention policy.
 
Responsibilities
  • On a day to day basis, you’ll be responsible for the development and maintenance of

    • The overall health and status of the core platform & corresponding data sources, including the protection of infrastructure against external cybersecurity threats

    • Improvements to developer experience, not limited to, but including CI/CD pipelines, developer tooling 

    • Automation of manual processes

    • Provide engineering infrastructure support to our Operations team and internal customers alongside the development teams


    As a member of the infrastructure team, you’ll be expected to

    • Work closely with development teams to ensure infrastructure supports the software development life cycle, including continuous integration and deployment.

    • Evaluate new technologies and common services and make recommendations for their use. 

    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement scalable, secure, and reliable cloud-based solutions. 

    • Write high quality and maintainable codebases to deploy and maintain infrastructure

    • Identify technical problems and develop software updates and fixes

    • Monitor processes during their entire lifecycle to update or define new processes for improving reliability and minimizing infrastructure costs

    • Assist in the development and implementation of engineering standards and best practices for other teams. 

    • Participate in cross team Scrum events to improve the overall quality of processes for our product teams

    • Assist in ensuring compliance with security and regulatory requirements.

Success in the Role

First Week

  • You’ll receive an initial onboarding briefing, review some paperwork and be introduced to the infrastructure team
  • We’ll schedule a brief overview of the team, platform & environments.
  • You’ll also begin setting up the development environment and ensure access to necessary resources (repositories, CI/CD pipelines, communication tools, etc.).
  • You’ll meet the full team and will have engaged in 1:1 introductions with key team members and stakeholders.
  • You’ll have received a full scale demonstration of platform products, capabilities & offerings. 
  • Reviewed the team’s workflows, documentation, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

First Quarter

  • Actively collaborate with team members on development stories, working on paired stories to learn the workflow and team dynamics.
  • You’ve participated in regular Agile meetings, release activities, and retrospectives to understand the cadence and scope of the development lifecycle. You now have a fundamental understanding of our operational requirements.
  • You’ve demonstrated your skill sets and have completed multiple features and deliverables. You’ve got a good understanding of our processes and have contributed to the larger team’s growth.
  • You have a basic understanding of our product offerings, how they interact with each other, and the infrastructure that’s required to build, test and deploy those applications. 

First Year

  • You’ve owned and led the development and delivery of complex stories and features, contributing independently to the codebase. 
  • You have a strong understanding of the position of the infrastructure team, our scope of control and our role in supporting the other teams. You now understand the impacts of changes that one product team may make on the other, and the infrastructure, developer experience changes which are required to support those changes.
  • You’ve begun informally mentoring your peers and new teammates, sharing knowledge, and improving team processes.
  • Provided feedback and directly contributed to the enhancement of team SOPs, code standards, and best practices.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline. The degree requirement can be met with four years of hands-on experience as a software engineer or a similar full-time position
  • 4+ years of software development experience and demonstrated understanding of the Agile principles and standard SDLC(s).
  • 4+ years of experience in cloud architecture with AWS. (certificate preferred).
  • Experience with multiple programming and scripting languages (e.g. - Python, Go, Javascript, and shell scripting) and API integration.
  • Strong understanding of Infrastructure as Code (primarily Terraform)
  • Significant experience with Gitlab CI/CD
  • Experience in deploying & maintaining containerized and serverless workloads in AWS
  • Experience with a variety of databases & datastores (Relational, Columnar and NoSQL)
  • Proficient in provisioning and maintaining linux-based infrastructure & container based architectures (Docker, Podman, Kubernetes)
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2-5 years of DevOps engineering experience
  • Strong knowledge of DevOps practices and tools, such as Gitlab, Docker, Kubernetes, and Git.
  • Experience developing and maintaining infrastructure for custom products and applications
  • Experience with orchestration tools such as Airflow, EMR, etc
  • Experience with configuration management tooling (Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc.)
  • Experience with real time monitoring and observability tooling.
