Systems Engineer - Global Resource Management (Data Residency)

In-Office
About Us

At Cloudflare, we are on a mission to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers millions of websites and other Internet properties for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare all have web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company.

At Cloudflare, we’re not looking for people who wait for a polished roadmap; we’re looking for the builders who see the cracks in the Internet that everyone else has simply learned to live with. We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a "normalized" problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. If you’re the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, you’ll fit right in.

Location: Austin (Hybrid)

About the Role

Cloudflare operates one of the world's largest networks, processing millions of requests per second across 300+ cities. Today, customers can localize where their traffic is processed, but their configuration data, logs, and cryptographic keys still live in centralized datacenters. Data Residency Architecture (DRA) closes that gap. It extends data residency from the data plane across every layer of how Cloudflare stores, processes, and protects customer data. Customers get the ability to keep their data where their laws say it should be. DRA isn't a separate network or an isolated fork. It's the same Cloudflare, with cryptographic and architectural controls ensuring customer data stays within the regions a customer chooses. The program spans multiple pillars, from regional storage and post-quantum cryptography to logging pipeline expansion and product onboarding, with multiple engineering teams working in parallel.

You'll join a small, high-autonomy team within this larger program. Your primary focus is building the customer-facing and internal experience for DRA: how customers create regionalized accounts, how API requests route to regional control planes, how the dashboard adapts to per-account data residency, and how Cloudflare's internal teams provision and manage it all. The nature of a cross-cutting program means you won't stay in one lane. You'll integrate with teams building the regional storage orchestrator, the cryptographic key layer, and the data pipeline infrastructure. The scope is wide, the team is small, and the decisions you make will shape how this system works at scale.

What You'll Work On

  • Regional API Routing - Build per-account API hostname generation and routing so that customer requests terminate in their chosen country, integrating with Cloudflare's Data Localization Suite and edge API gateway.
  • Dashboard Integration - Modify the Cloudflare dashboard so that API calls route through regional endpoints while surfacing clear regional indicators to the customer.
  • Account Creation & Provisioning - Build the account creation flow that captures country/region selection and integrates with the Control Plane Platform orchestrator to provision per-account regional storage and configuration.
  • Internal Tooling - Build admin tooling (provisioning integrations, billing shims, operational dashboards) so that support, sales, and finance teams can manage DRA accounts without violating residency constraints.
  • Cross-Team Integration - Work across the DRA program to integrate with regional storage, cryptographic key management, and logging infrastructure built by other teams.
  • Migration & Self-Service - Help design the path from manual provisioning (MVP) to dashboard self-service, and eventually tooling that migrates existing enterprise customers into DRA.

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience building production systems at scale.
  • Proficiency in Go. Our backend services and core platform are written in Go.
  • Comfort or willingness to work in TypeScript. Our control plane uses Cloudflare Workers (TypeScript), and the dashboard is a TypeScript application.
  • Experience designing and building REST APIs. You understand routing, authentication, request lifecycle, and how frontends consume distributed backends.
  • Comfort with distributed systems tradeoffs — data locality, replication, consistency models, and the latency implications of geographically distributed infrastructure. You don't need to have designed a sharded database, but you should be able to reason about why it matters that a customer's data is in Frankfurt and not Portland.
  • Ability to work across team boundaries. DRA spans nearly every engineering organization at Cloudflare. You'll need to navigate ambiguity, communicate technical tradeoffs clearly, and drive alignment with engineers you don't share a standup with.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with data residency, sovereignty, or compliance engineering (GDPR, EU Data Act, EUCS, FedRAMP, or equivalent regulatory frameworks).
  • Familiarity with edge computing platforms such as Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, or similar serverless/edge-native runtimes.
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, or SQLite in production environments.

Why This Role

  • Greenfield at scale. You're building a new architectural capability from the ground up on one of the largest networks on the Internet
  • Small team, big scope. This is a small, high-autonomy engineering team operating within a major cross-functional program. You'll have outsized ownership and direct influence over technical decisions, not a ticket queue.
  • Cross-cutting impact. DRA touches the control plane, data plane, logging pipeline, cryptographic infrastructure, and customer experience. This role is not siloed into one service or one layer of the stack.
  • Regulatory relevance. Data sovereignty is one of the defining infrastructure challenges of the next decade. You'll build deep expertise in a problem space with growing demand across every major cloud provider and regulated industry.

What Makes Cloudflare Special?

We’re not just a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company. We’re a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company with a soul. Fundamental to our mission to help build a better Internet is protecting the free and open Internet.

Project Galileo: Since 2014, we've equipped more than 2,400 journalism and civil society organizations in 111 countries with powerful tools to defend themselves against attacks that would otherwise censor their work, technology already used by Cloudflare’s enterprise customers--at no cost.

Athenian Project: In 2017, we created the Athenian Project to ensure that state and local governments have the highest level of protection and reliability for free, so that their constituents have access to election information and voter registration. Since the project, we've provided services to more than 425 local government election websites in 33 states.

1.1.1.1: We released 1.1.1.1 to help fix the foundation of the Internet by building a faster, more secure and privacy-centric public DNS resolver. This is available publicly for everyone to use - it is the first consumer-focused service Cloudflare has ever released. Here’s the deal - we don’t store client IP addresses never, ever. We will continue to abide by our privacy commitment and ensure that no user data is sold to advertisers or used to target consumers.

Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? We’d love to hear from you!

OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
