Power Market Analyst - Internal
Role Description
We are looking for a new commercial member of our forward power and cross commodiies desk. They will be responsible for contributing to all our forward power trading activities. This will be across GB, Conti and power transportation. The role is ideal for someone who has already shown strong commercial acumen and initiative across either analytics or trading and is looking to grow into a career managing risk in the forward markets. Power demand is only expected to grow for the foreseeable future, and the changing dynamics year on year make it an interesting place to focus one's career around. The potential value of risk to be managed on the forward power markets is enormous and thus can ensure sufficient upside for any ambitious risk warehouser over a whole career. Currently we have around 350 GWh of risk deployed on the forward power markets. Our ambition is for this level to reach up to 1 TWh next year, at times when we have highest conviction. We need the right people on the team to help build this conviction. Even the 1 TWh risk size would not make us a big forward power spec player. Many teams do very many times this size. The scalability is there.
Role responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Act as a commercial sparring partner to the traders and other analysts
- Contribute actionable trade ideas for inclusion in the portfolio.
- You will own the commercial view/analytics for a set of countries. i.e. you will be our specialist expert for those markets. Our expansion priority focuses on liquid, tradeable markets across Europe
- Monitor market fundamentals, news and general market positioning to support trading decisions.
- Continuously assess and manage portfolio risks, proposing improved rebalancing approaches.
- Build tools and views to support trading decisions.
- Liaise with the Middle Office on any PnL or risk-related matters.
- Support in the development of our general forward ETRM infrastructure where required.
This will be more important in the first few months as we are still finalizing everything on the VaR, capital consumption and position monitoring side.
Requirements
- Strong and proven commercial acumen, demonstrated by tangible contributions to PnL in a previous role. Commercial instinct and drive are top priorities. Current traders are encouraged to apply. Understanding that all activities must ultimately contribute to PnL
- Good technical skills are an advantage but not critical; however, the main thing is that you should have a strong willingness to build and improve upon your technical skills once on the job.
- Ability to identify high-impact opportunities and deliver 'bang for buck' in commercial projects.
- Desire to grow into a manager of forward risk.
- Strong performance in current role.
- Commercial knowledge of the power markets in general is a prerequisite. This would have been gained from either our analytics or trading team.
Potential Growth Paths: The primary trajectory for this role is to eventually manage your own trading book. An alternative trajectory is to become a trading strategist for the whole team, looking at the whole portfolio.
Target start date: October 1st. Dependent on current role and handover time required.
Application deadline: 5th September 2025.
Line manager: Alan. After 3 months, this line management will move to Andrej. Please reach out to Alan or any member of the FPCC desk if you have any queries or would like to understand more about our activities.

Currently most of our risk is deployed in Germany, with a small portion in France. We want to diversify our activities to other parts of Europe, so having more analysts focusing on these other countries is key because of both more opportunities and the chance to reduce the risk of our portfolio in general.
Notes (In the context of the table, 'Analyst' is referring to the data scientist role, while 'Commercial' is the power market analyst)
- Analyst that creates a country model will own it for next 6 months, after this time it can rotate.
- Analyst that owns the model also owns its attribution.
- Analyst that owns the model is also expected to understand and be involved in how it's being utilised commercially. Hopefully also contributing to portfolio decisions.
- Commercial means you are responsible for keeping 'numbers' updated and producing trade ideas from the balances.
- Commercial means that you are the go-to expert in our team when it comes to the detail in that country. Often the money is in the detail.
- Commercial is also responsible for working with Analyst to reduce manual number update requirements to zero over time.
- Next scheduled review of these ownerships will be done at the end of Q3. Sooner if there are team changes.
- Commercial to own comparison of external forecasts with ours, on any new update from them. I hope over time for this task to be moved to Analyst, as they get a bit more commercial and model workload has reduce
