Economic Consultant, Finance

We are seeking a Consultant to join Coherent Economics and support a wide range of matters, with a primary focus on finance matters. Ideal candidates will be PhD graduates who are looking to begin their careers in economic consulting. At Coherent, you will learn how to apply your research, econometric, and analytical expertise to real-world business, litigation, and regulatory matters. 

Typical engagements for a Consultant include finance and valuation, securities and financial markets, financial institutions, bankruptcy and solvency, business disputes, contractual claims, and financial damages. The ideal candidate will have doctoral training in Finance, Accounting, Financial Economics, or a closely related field. We are looking for someone with strong experience analyzing financial data, valuing businesses and securities, and applying rigorous empirical and analytical methods to complex questions.  

Consultants must be able to create work products with an exceptionally high level of attention to detail and precision, while also contextualizing their work within the broader case, all while learning to provide good instruction and feedback to Analysts. Consultants are expected to be advanced in data analysis, detailed research, preparing professional work product, and to have a working knowledge of the economic consulting industry. They are expected to design and oversee discrete projects, supervise and mentor Analysts, think critically about the cases they work on, and communicate effectively with case managers, Experts, and Clients. 

Successful candidates will bring strong quantitative and qualitative skills, including proficiency in financial analysis, valuation, statistical methods, detailed company and industry research, and the preparation of clear, professional work product. Consultants should be comfortable managing tasks independently, exercising sound judgment, and collaborating effectively as part of a case team.

Training & Development

Our onboarding program is designed to help new Consultants transition from academia to consulting through a combination of employee-led training modules, presentations from Partners and senior leadership, case-based learning, and mentorship from experienced colleagues. New Consultants quickly become integral members of case teams, working alongside senior economists, experts, and case managers to address complex economic questions and deliver rigorous, data-driven analyses.

Analysis 

  • Design and oversee discrete analyses and projects while managing time effectively  
  • Analyze data using Microsoft Excel, Stata, SQL, Python, and other analytical tools  
  • Identify, diagnose, and solve complex data and analytical problems  
  • Review, summarize, and analyze discovery materials  
  • Think critically about both individual work and the work of others  

Financial Matter Support 

  • Support engagements involving finance and valuation, securities and financial markets, financial institutions, bankruptcy and restructuring, business disputes, contractual claims, and financial damages 
  • Analyze causation, economic loss, and other damages issues as applicable to the matter 
  • Assess financial theories, assumptions, methodologies, and opposing analyses for consistency with the available record, relevant finance principles, and market evidence 

Mentorship & Management 

  • Supervise Analysts and provide training, and mentorship  
  • Support the professional development of junior staff through coaching and constructive feedback 

Expert Reports 

  • Assist in the preparation of expert reports and draft presentations and other client-facing materials  
  • Present and explain work product to Case Managers, Experts, and Clients  
  • Create professional quality charts, graphs, and other summary materials  
  • Incorporate feedback from Case Managers and Experts into revised analyses and written work product 

Research 

  • Perform detailed research on companies, securities, transactions, financial institutions, industries, and markets 
  • Review academic literature, regulatory materials, accounting guidance, analyst research, public filings, and market data relevant to the engagement 
  • Audit work product using best practices and anticipate potential criticisms of methodologies, sources, and assumptions  

Culture 

  • Participate in recruiting and other non-consulting activities, as requested by supervisors  
  • Adhere to Coherent Economics’ Core and Workplace Values 

Qualifications

  • PhD in Finance, Accounting, Financial Economics, Economics with a finance focus, or a closely related quantitative field 
  • 0-3 years of prior experience in academia, government, consulting, or a closely related field 
  • Demonstrated experience conducting independent empirical research and applying financial, statistical, or econometric methods to complex questions 
  • Strong foundation in corporate finance, investments, asset pricing, accounting, financial institutions, or valuation, with expertise in more areas preferred 
  • Experience analyzing large and complex financial datasets using Python, SQL, Stata, R, or similar analytical tools 
  • Experience working with cloud computing and large-scale data environments such as Databricks, Snowflake, AWS, or similar platforms preferred 
  • Advanced financial modeling and Microsoft Excel skills; experience with valuation methodologies and financial statement analysis strongly preferred 
  • Work experience outside academia, including consulting, finance, or industry research, is a plus  
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills  
  • Strong understanding of econometric techniques, statistical analysis, and causal inference methodologies  
  • Ability to translate complex quantitative results into clear, concise, and compelling written and verbal communications  
  • Exceptionally detail-oriented with strong quality-control and problem-solving skills  
  • Capable of managing multiple workstreams independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment  
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and interest in applying economics to real-world business, litigation, and regulatory issues  
  • Ability to commute to one of our offices in: Boston, MA, Chicago, IL or College Station, TX 

Compensation: $200,000-$260,000, 20% annual bonus
