Overview:
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL)/Senior Medical Science Liaison (Sr MSL) serves as a key scientific expert supporting the development and commercialization of the Coherus Oncology immuno-oncology portfolio. As part of a small biotech environment, the MSL will operate with a high degree of autonomy and cross-functional collaboration, engaging external stakeholders while contributing strategically to internal initiatives. This role focuses on building relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), delivering scientific exchange, and supporting clinical and translational efforts.
The MSL will build long term peer to peer relationships with thought leaders, payers and other stakeholders specializing in oncology treatment, and other areas where Coherus is developing and/or commercializing products. The MSL will support advancement of Coherus clinical and research programs by delivering clinical, scientific, and technical education to the medical community. The MSL is responsible for cultivating and maintaining collaborative relationships with influential members of the medical community to promote company, disease state and therapeutic awareness, in addition to serving as an advanced technical, scientific, and medical expert Coherus products and pipeline assets for the assigned region. The MSL is responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing Coherus corporate, scientific, and clinical strategies with these thought leaders within academic, clinical, and healthcare organizations. These scientific exchanges will support and/or expand current therapeutic concepts, as well as ensure the safe and effective utilization of Coherus product(s).
Responsibilities:
- Establish Coherus Oncology as a leading innovative oncology company focused on developing best-in-class medicines that overcome immune resistance in cancer
- Develop, track, and execute key opinion leader (KOL) engagement plans – identify, develop and maintain long-term collaborative relationships with KOLs within assigned region
- Maintain clinical, scientific and technical expertise in areas of oncology relevant to Coherus products and pipeline
- Deliver high-quality, non-promotional scientific exchange regarding company products, pipeline assets, and relevant disease areas
- Present clinical value proposition to payers and regional accounts payer formulary decisions
- Engage in continuous learning within the therapeutic areas represented and actively attend and participate in upskilling programs related to assigned molecules, products, disease states and relevant business topics
- Heighten medical affairs presence and visibility by leading individual projects and initiatives
- Collaborate with medical affairs, clinical development, commercial and serve as a Coherus resource to HCPs, large group medical practices, payers and formulary decision makers
- Provide medical/ clinical teams with feedback and insights from interactions with KOLs and investigators
- Respond to and document unsolicited requests for information on Coherus products and clinical programs
- Participate in/support the training of Coherus field and home office employees
- Facilitate research collaborations such as Real-World Data [RWD] generation and investigator sponsored trials [ISTs) with key investigators
- Represent the company at medical meetings through Medical Affairs’ Medical Booth coverage and other related activities
- Engage in speaker identification, training and evaluation and provide support for advisory board meetings as requested
- Collaborate with Market Access and Commercial colleagues for thought leader and institutional engagement where appropriate
- Support internal requests for dossier review and comment, medical review/consideration of potential business development opportunities and other unique projects as requested
- Adhere to corporate SOPs and ensure vigilant compliance with relevant legal and regulatory guidelines governing scientific interactions with physicians and healthcare professionals across all activities, including those related to clinical trials, scientific interactions with internal and external groups, and responses to unsolicited requests for medical/ scientific information
Qualifications:
- An advanced degree (MD, DO, Ph.D., Pharm D) is preferred; NP and PA degrees with strong relevant clinical experience will be considered
- A minimum of 2 years previous MSL experience in oncology (with head and neck cancer, liver cancer and/or gastrointestinal cancer preferred)
- A Senior MSL requires minimum of 3-5 years of previous experience as a MSL with demonstrated track record of leadership in the MSL role:
- Serves as a mentor for MSL team members, leading by example, actively sharing best practices through teaching, training, and modeling aspects of the MSL role in interactions with HCPs
- Acts with a high degree of independence in the region/field and manages a variety of priorities and projects such as training, planning, content creation, advisory boards, etc.
- Solution- & flexible ‘problem solver’ who can take a project from A to Z
- Grows KOL interface with company initiatives supporting corporate and medical strategy
- Maintains strong collaborative effort with communication and rapport across all internal stakeholders
- Maintains a persistent independent learning/self-development program, staying current with therapeutic landscape
- Ability to research and critically analyze and communicate complex scientific and medical information and data
- Ability to establish strong relationships and discuss complex scientific topics in a peer-to-peer manner
- Is an active listener and demonstrates emotional intelligence with external customers and with internal partners, with proven impact to individual territory development and collaborative efforts
- Ability to travel, locally and regionally, up to 60% with overnight stays (e.g., KOL meetings, site locations, internal meetings, medical meetings and congresses, training)
- Experience working with payers of formulary committees strongly preferred
- Knowledge of FDA requirements and PhRMA Code, including regulations governing compliant scientific exchange
- Demonstrated ability to integrate and work in cross functional network/matrix
- Demonstrated project management ability
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and presentation skills
- Exhibits professional maturity, confidence, and competence
The Base Salary Range for this position is $170,000 to $240,000. Coherus considers various factors, including professional background and work experience, when determining base pay. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary.
