The Opportunity...
The Director of Data Strategy and Governance is responsible for defining and executing the organization's data strategy, ensuring data governance, compliance, and alignment with business objectives. This role oversees data policies, security, and quality standards while enabling the organization to leverage data for business insights and operational excellence. The director collaborates with IT, business leaders, legal, and compliance teams to ensure data is trusted, well-managed, and effectively utilized across the enterprise.
What You'll Do...
1. Data Strategy & Vision
- Develop and drive a comprehensive enterprise data strategy to support business objectives, analytics, and digital transformation.
- Define and execute a data governance framework to ensure data integrity, security, and compliance.
- Align data initiatives with business priorities to drive growth, efficiency, and innovation.
2. Data Governance & Compliance
- Establish data governance policies, processes, and standards to ensure data quality, security, and regulatory compliance (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, SOX).
- Develop and oversee a data stewardship program, ensuring business and IT teams follow data governance best practices.
- Collaborate with Legal, Security, and Compliance teams to manage risks related to data privacy and regulatory requirements.
3. Data Management & Architecture
- Work with IT and engineering teams to define data architecture, data lakes, data warehouses, and integration strategies.
- Ensure proper metadata management, data cataloging, and master data management (MDM) to maintain high-quality, discoverable data.
- Oversee the implementation of data lifecycle management, ensuring proper retention, archiving, and deletion policies.
4. Data Enablement & Business Insights
- Lead data literacy and enablement programs, ensuring business users and analysts can self-serve and derive value from data.
- Partner with business stakeholders to prioritize data initiatives, develop dashboards, and drive data-driven decision-making.
- Establish and optimize data-sharing processes, ensuring secure and seamless access to relevant data across the organization.
5. Leadership & Team Development
- Build and lead a Data Governance Office (DGO) or similar function within the organization.
- Hire, mentor, and develop a team of data governance professionals, data stewards, and compliance experts.
- Drive cross-functional collaboration with IT, business units, and external partners to enhance data governance maturity.
6. Technology & Tools
- Evaluate and implement data governance and cataloging tools (e.g., Collibra, Alation, Informatica, Talend).
- Support cloud and on-premise data platforms, ensuring alignment with best practices in data security and management.
- Stay informed about emerging trends in AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics, incorporating them into data strategies.
Essential Skills & Experience
- 10+ years of experience in data management, data governance, or enterprise data strategy roles.
- Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Experience working with enterprise data platforms, data warehouses, and cloud-based data ecosystems (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Familiarity with data security, privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA), and compliance standards.
- Proven ability to drive cross-functional collaboration between business and IT teams.
- Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Who You Are...
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Experience in a SaaS, enterprise software, or cloud-first organization.
- Knowledge of AI governance and responsible data use frameworks.
- Certifications in Data Governance (e.g., DCAM, CDMP) or Data Privacy (CIPP, CIPT).
- Experience with FinOps and cost optimization strategies related to data infrastructure.

US Pay Range
$166,345 - $244,950 USD
