What is the Role?

Bring your passion for discovery and leadership to Coney Island Prep as our incoming High School Science Teacher & Content Team Lead! Whether you specialize in Living Environment, Chemistry, Earth Science, AP Environmental Science, Bioethics, or AP Biology, we invite you to apply. We are especially looking for educators with experience teaching AP courses who can design college-level experiences that prepare our scholars for AP exams.

As a Content Team Lead, you will teach at least 25% of the time while also supporting your fellow science educators in instructional coaching, data-driven decision-making, and fostering a strong culture of learning. You will collaborate with school leadership, coach peers, lead Content Team meetings and ensure that our science classrooms are engaging, rigorous, and equitable learning environments.

This is a unique opportunity to impact student achievement while shaping instructional practices school-wide.

What You’ll Be Asked To Do

Instruction and Student Learning

  • Internalize standards-aligned curriculum and content
  • On a daily basis, teach academically rigorous and culturally relevant lesson plans, materials, and assessments, and differentiate as needed
  • Communicate effectively with all scholars, their families, and staff
  • Commit to a culture of consistently implementing school-wide systems, structures, and procedures
  • Eradicate the effects of racism, poverty and other forms of oppression in our school community by making resources, opportunities, support systems, and classrooms equitable and accessible for all our stakeholders.
  • Analyze and action plan using instructional and culture data to improve teaching practice and strengthen student outcomes
  • Be proactive in creating a positive, structured, results-oriented, and fun learning environment that supports the needs of students with various abilities and experiences
  • Participate in school community responsibilities such as lunch duty, dismissal and hallway duties, daily homeroom, bi-weekly advisory groups, weekly content and grade team meetings, whole-staff professional development, lesson internalization and practice, and office hours once a week

Coaching & Action Planning

  • Real time coach the BMC/system
  • Implement effective action steps and interventions
  • Coach and give feedback on normed routines and other strategies (demonstrate enthusiasm, precise praise, moments of flexibility, developing relationships with scholars)
  • Follow up in person after ineffective intervention as needed
  • Provide feedback on content and relevance of advisory plans/classroom aesthetics
  • With DOS or VP, conduct a Systems Walkthrough using a Systems Checklist; provide real time coaching around Systems and provide feedback into our tracking system. (when applicable)

Data Collection & Analysis

  • Collect data using a rubric and identify area of growth post observation; set clear expectations for teacher actions and hold teammates accountable for expectations and outcomes
  • Identify root causes in outcomes and trends; connect outcomes and trends to events in classrooms; create plans that target root causes 
  • Review and analyze student culture data weekly to identify root causes for behavioral trends for individuals and across content teams
  • Use data to drive preparation for weekly team meetings and culture events

Collaboration & Culture

  • Collaborate weekly with DOS/ADOS, VPs, and Ops Team (and Social Workers when appropriate) to:
    • Provide input on support plans for teachers who struggle with implementing behavior management systems and culture best practices
    • Create/implement/maintain student intervention plans and support grade level parent communication
    • With DOS or VP, conduct daily observations of in-class and whole school systems and culture walk observations when possible
    • Support with student and team culture, behavior, and stakeholder relationships
  • Participate in weekly Academic Leadership Team meetings to ensure consistent school culture across contents served.

Time Management and Organization

  • Organize calendar to include all Content Team Lead and teacher responsibilities
  • Contribute to homeroom slides to ensure content team is up to date with school/content specific happenings
  • Plan Content Team Meetings with the support of your Vice Principal
  • Monitor coverage plans and help coordinate coverage when teachers on your team are absent
  • Plan and lead weekly content team meetings to include: Module internalization meetings, weekly planning meetings, weekly data meetings, vertical alignment, content specific professional development sessions as needed, Regents scoring teams

Who are we?

Coney Island Prep High School is a college preparatory, public charter high school located in the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn and is the first charter school located in Community School District 21. Founded in 2013, CIPHS enrolls approximately 350 students in grades 9-12, with 75 students in the senior class. Since its first graduating class in 2017, every CIPHS senior graduates with college acceptances in hand. Scholars dive into a rigorous curriculum rich with AP courses, College and Career Readiness classes, all in a supportive, small-school environment with extracurricular opportunities from sports to enrichment clubs and leadership opportunities. All CIPHS seniors are eligible for tuition assistance and financial support starting at a baseline amount of $3,000 annually through the PRIDE Promise Scholarship.

Benefits and Compensation

  • Lead teachers at Coney Island Prep are provided with salaries that are highly competitive, set through a lens of equity, and based on an individual’s years of teaching experience in a K-12 school environment. The salary range for this role is from $69,000-$95,000. 
  • As Content Team Lead, you will receive a $5,000 stipend in addition to the salary and benefits.
  • As a regular full time employee of Coney Island Prep, you will be eligible for benefits that include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as a 403(b) retirement benefit package with match and Paid Family Leave.
  • Staff are provided with a MacBook Air and access to all the necessary technology and resources needed to succeed in their role.
