OVERVIEW

Consumer Reports tests thousands of products each year.  With over 100 testing and research experts and 63 state of the art labs, our Westchester headquarters is the largest nonprofit educational and consumer product testing center in the world.

As Manager, Test Technicians you will supervise the day to day activities for the technical and operations staff who are conducting simple to complex tests in our labs.  Reporting to the Director, Lab Operations,  the Manager ensures the team maintains a steady workflow, with a focus on productivity and addressing operational decisions and issues that impact product testing.

This position requires you to work onsite at our facility in Yonkers, New York.  This position is not eligible for sponsorship.

How You'll Make An Impact

Our test results and recommendations help consumers make critical and informed buying decisions, sometimes influencing companies to improve their products to meet our high standards. Your expertise will support the development of new testing methodologies and help maintain the quality and efficiency of our testing operations.You will also assist in training colleagues and maintaining lab equipment. On a daily basis, you will:

  • Supervise the daily activities of technical or operations support teams.
  • Set priorities and schedules for the team to ensure task completion.
  • Coordinate work activities with other managers.
  • Support, measure and record ongoing operational performance results.
  • Ensure that team members contribute to the development and documentation of Protocols, Procedures and Work Instructions.
  • Oversee team members, making sure that the Work Instructions and Test Procedures are accurate and updated. 
  • Hire, manage, motivate, and develop staff, creating the team’s vision and ambitions.
  • Promote the use of data, leverage metrics for identifying improvement opportunities and problem-solving activities.
  • Stay current on external trends, testing standards and competitors’ practices.
  • Assist with budgets for staffing and equipment.
  • Maintain the safety of personnel as they interface with labs and equipment while maintaining laboratory cleanliness, orderliness and professionalism are at the highest caliber.

ABOUT YOU

  • You have the education and the experience. You’ve earned a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline. 
  • You’ve led teams.. You have demonstrated experience in a leadership position over technical staff within a relevant industry for at least 5-years. 
  • You know best practices for testing. Your knowledge of and experience includes quality assurance and continuous improvement tools, best practices, methods and approaches.
  • You can delegate. You have previously and are comfortable with, delegating tasks appropriately to the team to drive work to completion.
  • You are a leader. Your leadership skills include  setting and achieving goals, initiating actions to resolve problems and improve processes and the ability to coach and collaborate with individuals in a team.
  • Data drives your decision making. You apply a data and metrics driven approach to management.
  • You are a critical thinker. You have strong analytical and critical thinking skills that include the ability to run reports, analyze and interpret data.

  • You have earned an advanced degree in engineering or a relevant scientific discipline.
  • You know R&D.  Your prior work experience in research & development, testing or operations area.
  • You are process-oriented. You have knowledge of / experience in Lean Six Sigma or similar continuous improvement environments is a plus.

At Consumer Reports, we are committed to fair, transparent pay and we strive to provide competitive, market-informed compensation informed by location, as well as the candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience. It is expected that most qualified candidates will fall near the middle of the posted salary range. We have three locations: Yonkers, NY, Washington, DC and Colchester, CT. We are registered to do business in and can only hire from the following states and federal district: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Vermont, Virginia and Washington, DC.

Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by the candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience.  We have three locations: Yonkers, NY, Washington, DC and Colchester, CT.
