OVERVIEW
CR’s Data Visualization Designers create data-driven visual stories that make complex product testing results, safety investigations, and consumer reporting accessible and actionable. As a Senior User Experience Visual Design, you will translate complex datasets—including product performance testing, safety investigations, recalls, regulatory actions, market trends, and consumer research—into accessible charts, graphics, interactive experiences, and explanatory visuals that help consumers understand risks, compare products, and make confident decisions.
The Senior User Experience Visual Designer reports to the Associate Director, Brand Design and works collaboratively with our journalists, researchers, and testing experts to create visualizations, infographics, graphs, charts and other design elements that make CR’s content more engaging and insightful. In this position you will get to pitch concepts and explore new and tested visual techniques.
We’re looking for a designer that has the ability to design with the audience in mind, creating infographics that are intuitive and accessible, even to those unfamiliar with the topic. How You'll Make An Impact
The stories you will work on will champion consumers’ interests and change people’s lives. Specifically you will:
- Create visual designs such as charts, graphs, and interactives, for digital products, ensuring alignment with the overall UX strategy and user needs.
- Partner with the content team to understand upcoming stories and develop design approaches to enhance coverage. Pitch concepts aligned with brand voice and tone.
- Collaborate with UX researchers to gather insights through user interviews, surveys, and usability testing, integrating findings into design decisions.
- Explore visual ways of telling stories by using a variety of techniques and approaches to create compelling narratives through design, such as audience interaction, layout, and structure.
- Design data visualizations and information graphics that include high-fidelity visual designs, typography, color schemes, iconography, and layout, ensuring brand consistency across all platforms.
- Prototype and develop interactives in HTML, CSS and JS.
- Implement interactive graphics in the content management system.
- Optimize presentation across platforms by ensuring that visual and interactive elements provide a consistent, engaging experience tailored to each platform’s unique characteristics.
- Update and refresh graphics when necessary.
- Stay informed about competitors and industry trends.

ABOUT YOU
You’ll Be Highly Rated If:
- You have a degree. You’ll need a BS in design, computer science or a related discipline.
- You have the experience. We’re looking for someone with at least 7-years of professional design experience for an information-driven digital publication.
- You can code. Our team relies on your ability to translate accessible designs into code which displays well on desktop and mobile environments.
- You have a portfolio that demonstrates strong visual and graphic design skills, including data visualization and information graphics.
- You understand basic data analysis so that you can interpret raw data, extract key insights, and identify trends for visualization and can distill complex information into essential points..
- You are knowledgeable in design fundamentals and storytelling techniques, including color theory, typography, composition, and layout, to create visuals that are both attractive and easily understood and flow visually to guide the viewer’s understanding.
- You are a skilled collaborator and communicator. You partner well with cross-functional colleagues to convey the intended message.
- You are adaptable to feedback and can incorporate new information or changing project needs while maintaining quality visuals that meet brand guidelines, consistent style and tone.

FAIR PAY AND A JUST WORKPLACE
At Consumer Reports, we are committed to fair, transparent pay and we strive to provide competitive, market-informed compensation informed by location, as well as the candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience. It is expected that most qualified candidates will fall near the middle of the posted salary range. We have three locations: Yonkers, NY, Washington, DC and Colchester, CT. We are registered to do business in and can only hire from the following states and federal district: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Vermont, Virginia and Washington, DC.
Salary ranges:
- NY/California/DMV, Massachusetts: $137,819.17K-$142,948.94K annually
- Colchester, CT and additional approved CR locations: $130,928.22K-$135,801.49 annually
