We're looking for an experienced data analyst to support our newsroom's data analytics needs on a contract basis.
Join Courier Newsroom - an organization that drives journalism and empowers communities.
At Courier Newsroom, we’re reinventing local media to inform and empower communities through impactful reporting. Our mission is rooted in civic engagement and equity—and we’re growing fast.
COURIER Newsroom is committed to building an inclusive workplace that values diverse perspectives and lived experiences. We strongly encourage women, people of color, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQ+ candidates, and those from all backgrounds to apply. As an equal opportunity employer, we strive to break down barriers and ensure every team member feels seen, heard, and supported.
What You'll Do
You'll build and maintain reporting dashboards that track our newsroom's core KPIs, alongside on-demand analysis covering subscriber data, platform metrics, revenue, and voter information. The role will also require turning complex & messy data into clean, well-organized datasets ready for analysis. We use Google Looker as our primary dashboarding platform; experience with notebooks (Jupyter, Google Colab, etc.) is a plus.
The role requires regular collaboration with fellow analysts and engineers, newsroom staff, and leadership stakeholders. You'll need to understand what they need, translate those requirements into technical solutions, and communicate progress clearly and maturely.
Technical Requirements
- Advanced SQL proficiency: Be able to write efficient queries in SQL including CTEs, recursive queries, window functions, and pivoting/unpivoting of data
- Python proficiency: Review and develop scripts for data manipulation and querying
- Data extraction: Experience fetching data from REST APIs and web scraping when necessary
- Looker: Create and maintain dashboards in the Looker platform
- BigQuery or similar warehouse platform: Familiarity with fetching and managing data in Google BigQuery or equivalent enterprise data warehouse/lakehouse
- Google Workspace: Experience working with the document, spreadsheet, and productivity tools within Google Workspace ecosystem
- Version control: Standard git workflows
- Voter File: Experience working with voter file data
What We're Looking For
Someone who can hit the ground running. You will be expected to manage your own time, communicate proactively when blockers arise, and work independently. In this fast paced environment, you will need to adapt to change accordingly.
